How to Enjoy Life More: The Art of Novelty

In this post, I’m sharing simple ways to enjoy life more by embracing novelty, breaking out of everyday routines, and making room for a little more spontaneity, beauty, and wonder.

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase through a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

Woman wearing an elegant white outfit and sunglasses while relaxing on a cream sofa, embracing everyday glamour and finding reasons to dress up without a special occasion.
Pink lilies arranged in a glass vase with other fresh flowers, bringing color and beauty to an ordinary day through simple pleasures.

There’s a certain power in newness. The unfamiliar, the unexpected, the little experiences that interrupt our routines and remind us what it feels like to be fully present in our own lives.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve become incredibly good at optimizing just about everything. We track our sleep, count our steps, monitor our calories, organize our schedules, and build routines designed to make us healthier, happier, and more productive. On paper, we’re doing everything right. Yet somehow, the weeks blur together, the months disappear, and another year passes before we’ve had a chance to really experience it.

Think back to three Wednesdays ago, around 4 p.m. Chances are, you have no idea what you were doing. But think about the first time you cooked an new recipe, wandered into a little shop while traveling, or tried something completely outside your comfort zone. Those memories tend to come back a little more vividly.

There’s actually some science behind this. Novel experiences engage parts of the brain involved in learning, memory, and reward, helping certain moments stand out against the repetition of everyday life. It’s one of the reasons a spontaneous afternoon can sometimes feel more memorable than an entire week spent following the same familiar routine.

And I think that’s something worth considering as we approach another New Year.

We’re so accustomed to treating January 1st as an opportunity to become better versions of ourselves. More disciplined, more organized, more productive. Another set of goals, another habit tracker, another carefully constructed routine. But maybe we’ve become so focused on building the perfect life that we’ve forgotten to actually live in it.

I’m not suggesting we abandon discipline or stop working toward the things we want. Good habits have their place, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about creating a life that works for you. But there also has to be room for the things that can’t be measured, improved, or neatly checked off a to-do list.

The unexpected detour. The beautiful jewelry we keep saving for a special occasion. The hobbies we’re terrible at but enjoy anyway. The moments of awe that remind us the world is much bigger than our own little schedules.

So this New Year, instead of adding another list of things to optimize, I’m making a case for a little more novelty, spontaneity, and everyday magic. Not a complete reinvention, but a shift in how we experience the lives we’ve already built.

Break Out of Autopilot: Make Room for Novelty

People relaxing on a sunny lawn in a park, enjoying the outdoors and the simple pleasures of everyday life.
Beautifully decorated living room with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and thoughtful details that make everyday life feel special.

1. A Little Change Goes a Long Way

When life starts feeling a little repetitive, it’s tempting to assume that something major needs to change. Maybe it’s time for a dramatic haircut, a new job, a different city, or an entirely new routine. We convince ourselves that the answer to feeling uninspired is to completely reinvent our lives. But sometimes, all it takes is changing 10%.

Take a different route to work, rearrange the furniture in a room you’ve stopped noticing, try a new workout, or spend an afternoon exploring a neighborhood you’ve never visited. Small changes can introduce a surprising amount of freshness into an otherwise familiar routine.

The idea isn’t to constantly chase the next exciting thing or become dissatisfied with what you already have. It’s to interrupt the automatic patterns that make our days feel so interchangeable.

You don’t necessarily need a new life to feel something new. Sometimes, you just need to experience your existing life a little differently.

Woman exploring artwork in a museum gallery, embracing new experiences and finding inspiration outside her everyday routine.

2. Make Room for the Unexpected

There’s something wonderfully refreshing about being a beginner at something, especially when you have absolutely no intention of becoming an expert.

Try learning a few chords on an instrument you’ve never played, order something completely unfamiliar at a restaurant, take an introductory dance class, or attempt a recipe from a cuisine you know nothing about. Pick up a book from a genre you’d normally overlook. Visit a museum without researching every exhibit beforehand.

The possibilities are practically endless, and they don’t have to be expensive or elaborate.

The important part is resisting the urge to turn these experiences into another self-improvement project. You don’t need a 30-day challenge, a progress tracker, or a carefully researched plan for becoming proficient at your latest interest. In fact, the less pressure you put on the experience, the better.

Allow yourself to be terrible at something. Change your mind halfway through. Try something once and never do it again. Not every new interest needs to become a permanent hobby, and not every experience needs to lead somewhere.

Sometimes, the entire point is simply that you did something different on an otherwise ordinary Tuesday.

Woman enjoying a peaceful morning in a white canopy bed, surrounded by soft linens and natural light.

3. Rediscover the Art of Doing Nothing

We’ve become experts at eliminating boredom from our lives. There’s a podcast for every commute, a playlist for every activity, and an endless supply of videos to fill even the smallest gaps in our schedules.

Standing in line at the grocery store? Check your phone. Waiting for the coffee to brew? Scroll through Instagram. Taking a walk? Put on something educational so the time feels productive. Even our downtime has become something we’re expected to make the most of.

But when every quiet moment is filled with information, entertainment, or somebody else’s thoughts, there’s very little room left for our own.

Try implementing ten minutes a day of completely undiluted life. Take a walk without headphones, sit outside without bringing a book, or wait for your appointment without reaching for your phone.

Let your mind wander without directing it toward anything in particular. You might feel restless at first, especially if you’re accustomed to constant stimulation. That’s okay. The purpose isn’t to achieve some extraordinary state of mindfulness or unlock your next brilliant idea. It’s simply to leave a little breathing room in a life that rarely seems to have any.

Finding the Beauty in Ordinary Life

4. Stop Waiting for a Special Occasion

Think about something you once desperately wanted that has since become a completely ordinary part of your life.

Maybe it’s the job you worked so hard to land, the car you dreamed about driving, or the wardrobe you spent years putting together. At one point, these things represented something exciting. Now, they’re simply part of the background.

It’s a familiar phenomenon known as hedonic adaptation. Over time, we become accustomed to positive changes in our circumstances, and the excitement they initially brought begins to fade.

Suddenly, the dream apartment needs a bigger kitchen. The beautiful car is just another way to get to work. The things we once imagined would make us happy become normal, and the bar moves a little higher.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wanting more out of life. But there’s something worth appreciating about recognizing when you’re already living with things you once wished for.

And that includes the little luxuries we keep saving for some imaginary perfect occasion. Wear the expensive perfume on a random Wednesday. Light the candle you’ve been saving. Use the beautiful dishes for a simple dinner at home. Take the scenic route in the car you once couldn’t wait to own.

The good things in your life don’t need to be preserved indefinitely to remain special. Sometimes, the best way to appreciate them is to actually use them.

Build your dream life, but remember to stop and admire the life you’ve built.

5. Bring a Little Glamour Back to Everyday Life

I love the older, more magical meaning of the word glamour. Historically associated with enchantment and the ability to alter perception, it’s a much more interesting concept than simply looking polished or expensive.

Because glamour, in this sense, isn’t necessarily about changing your circumstances. It’s about changing the way you experience them.

A regular dinner becomes a little more interesting with candlelight and a good playlist. An afternoon spent running errands feels different when you’re wearing something you love. Even an ordinary evening at home can take on an entirely different atmosphere with softer lighting, fresh flowers, and a little intention.

None of these things fundamentally changes what’s happening in your life. The laundry still needs folding, the dishes still need washing, and tomorrow’s responsibilities aren’t going anywhere. But the experience of being there changes. And I think there’s something powerful about choosing beauty even when life isn’t particularly beautiful.

You can be having a difficult week and still wear your favorite perfume. You can be stressed out in a fabulous fur coat. You can have absolutely nothing figured out and still enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Glamour doesn’t have to mean pretending everything is perfect. Sometimes, it’s simply refusing to let life’s less-than-perfect moments take away your appreciation for beautiful things.

A little enchantment can coexist with reality.

Cappuccino served in a delicate teacup on a silver tray with a matching teapot, celebrating slow mornings and everyday rituals.

6. Find Beauty in the Mundane

Not every beautiful moment needs to be discovered. Sometimes, you can create one yourself.

Set the table properly, even when you’re eating alone. Put your morning coffee in the prettiest cup you own. Take a shower by candlelight instead of turning on the harsh overhead light. Arrange a few grocery store flowers in a thrifted vase, or play your favorite record while making breakfast.

These are small gestures, but they can completely change the atmosphere of an otherwise ordinary day. And unlike the carefully curated moments we’re so accustomed to seeing online, these little experiences don’t need an audience.

You don’t have to photograph the flowers, film your morning routine, or turn your beautifully plated lunch into a piece of content. In fact, I’d argue there’s something especially lovely about creating a beautiful moment that nobody else knows about.

Not everything needs to be aesthetically pleasing for Instagram. Some things can simply be aesthetically pleasing to you. Make your life visually interesting because you’re the one who gets to live in it.

Make Space for Wonder, Creativity & Curiosity

7. Find Wonder Beyond Yourself

We spend so much of our time thinking about ourselves. Are we productive enough? Healthy enough? Successful enough? Are we making progress, falling behind, or doing everything we’re supposed to be doing? It’s exhausting to constantly be the main character of our own internal performance review.

One of my favorite ways to interrupt that cycle is to experience something that makes my usual concerns feel insignificant.

Stand under an enormous tree and look up through its branches. Visit somewhere with an incredible view, spend an afternoon beside the ocean, or wake up early enough to watch the sunrise. There’s a particular kind of wonder that comes from encountering something so beautiful, vast, or extraordinary that your attention naturally shifts away from yourself.

We typically refer to this feeling as awe, an emotional response to experiences that challenge our usual frame of reference. And while a trip to the mountains or an incredible natural landmark might inspire it, awe doesn’t always require a plane ticket or an elaborate adventure.

Sometimes, it’s the night sky. A beautiful piece of classical music. An old building that’s been standing for hundreds of years. The sheer size of the ocean.

Make room for experiences that remind you how much exists beyond your daily routines, responsibilities, and personal ambitions. Every once in a while, remove yourself as the headline and let the world be the interesting thing.

Watercolor paints, brushes, and illustrated paper arranged on a pink tabletop, encouraging creativity for the joy of creating.
Open notebook with handwritten notes surrounded by books and creative materials, inspiring independent thinking and intentional living.

8. Create for the Sake of Creating

Somewhere along the way, hobbies became another opportunity to accomplish something. If you’re good at painting, you should sell your artwork. If you enjoy baking, you should start a business. If you love decorating your home, you should document the process online.

Even our most personal creative interests can start to feel like potential side hustles, content opportunities, or extensions of a personal brand. But creativity existed long before content. And I think there’s something incredibly freeing about making something with absolutely no intention of sharing it.

Write a short story that stays in your notebook. Paint something terrible and hang it in your closet. Learn a song on the guitar without ever recording yourself playing it. Make a scrapbook that’s meant for your eyes only.

Don’t worry about whether it’s impressive, original, marketable, or particularly good. You don’t have to improve at it. You don’t have to finish it. You don’t even have to show anybody that you tried.

There’s a different kind of satisfaction that comes from creating something simply because you felt like creating it. No audience, no engagement, no monetization, and no metrics. Just the joy of making something that belongs entirely to you.

Open book beside a warm drink and notebook, capturing a peaceful morning of reading, reflection, and slow living.
Hand holding a metal cup of coffee in soft sunlight, appreciating the small everyday moments that make life more enjoyable.

9. Let Your Own Thoughts Come First

Think about how quickly other people’s thoughts can become the soundtrack to our own lives.

You wake up, reach for your phone, and within minutes you’ve watched somebody else’s vacation, read a stranger’s opinion, discovered a new trend, and absorbed a dozen different ideas about what you should be doing with your day. Before you’ve even had your coffee, your mind is already full.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with consuming content, and the internet can be an amazing source of inspiration. But when we’re constantly taking in other people’s ideas, it becomes harder to notice our own.

Try giving yourself a little time to think or create before inviting the rest of the world into your mind. Write three sentences in a notebook. Sketch something while your coffee brews. Play a few chords on an instrument, read a page of a book, or simply sit with your thoughts for a few minutes in silence.

It doesn’t have to become another elaborate morning routine. In fact, I’d avoid making it one. Some mornings you’ll have twenty minutes. Other mornings you’ll have two. The point is to give your imagination a chance to speak before you fill your attention with everybody else’s.

You might be surprised by how much is happening in your own mind when you actually give yourself an opportunity to hear it.

Build a Life That Feels Good to Live In

10. Bring Back the Art of Homemaking

There’s an old-fashioned kind of comfort in the idea of homemaking.

Traditionally, the hearth was the center of the home, a place associated with warmth, food, gathering, and everyday life. I love thinking about that concept in a modern context, especially when so much of our attention is directed toward what exists outside our own four walls.

We’re constantly encouraged to go somewhere new, buy something better, upgrade our surroundings, or find the next exciting experience.

But there’s also something deeply satisfying about making the place you already live feel like somewhere you genuinely want to be.

A home doesn’t need to resemble a perfectly styled showroom to be beautiful. In fact, I think the most interesting homes are the ones that feel the most lived in.

Music playing while dinner cooks. A blanket draped over the sofa. Fresh flowers from the grocery store. Books you’ve actually read, collected objects with stories behind them, and little rituals that start to feel comforting.

Create a signature scent for your home. Learn a few meals you genuinely love making. Make your favorite corner a place you look forward to spending time in.

And when you invite people over, think less about impressing them and more about how you want them to feel. Warm, comfortable, welcome, and completely at ease.

Tending the hearth isn’t about constantly decorating, purchasing, or improving your home. It’s about giving your space a sense of life. Your home should feel like the heart of your world, not just somewhere you return to between everything else.

11. Always Have Something to Look Forward To

One of the strange things about adulthood is how quickly a full calendar can become a calendar full of obligations. Dentist appointments, deadlines, errands, bills, meetings, and the endless administrative details of keeping life running smoothly.

You can be incredibly busy without having much you’re genuinely excited about. That’s why I love the idea of always having something on the horizon that you’re looking forward to.

It doesn’t need to be a major vacation or an expensive event. A dinner reservation at a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, tickets to a movie, an afternoon exploring a nearby town, or a quiet Sunday with absolutely nothing on the agenda can be enough.

Sometimes, the anticipation is half the experience. Choosing what to wear, imagining the atmosphere, deciding what you’ll order, or simply knowing that a relaxing afternoon is waiting for you at the end of a long week can make the days leading up to it feel a little more exciting.

And importantly, something worth looking forward to doesn’t always have to involve doing more. Maybe it’s a completely empty weekend, a morning spent reading in bed, or a lazy evening with zero plans.

The goal isn’t to fill every available space in your calendar. It’s to make sure your calendar contains things that feel like living, not just managing a life.

Because discipline and structure are wonderful tools for building the life you want, but they aren’t the entire point of having one. There should always be a little room for anticipation, pleasure, curiosity, and the unexpected.

Woman in a flowing white dress walking barefoot through a lush green field toward the forest, embracing spontaneity, nature, and new experiences to enjoy life more.

The beginning of a new year usually makes us want to get our lives in order. We make plans, set goals, build routines, and imagine all the ways things could be different. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, I think its important to have ambitions and create structure around the things that matter to us.

The problem isn’t discipline or productivity. It’s forgetting what all that effort is supposed to be for.

A well-organized life can give us more freedom, not less. Good habits can make room for spontaneous adventures, creative afternoons, and the simple pleasure of doing absolutely nothing. The key is to remember that our routines are meant to support our lives, not become the entire point of them.

Because there’s a difference between building a life that looks good on paper and building one that actually feels good to live.

And maybe that’s the kind of fresh start worth embracing, whether it’s January 1st or some completely ordinary Tuesday in the middle of July. Not another dramatic reinvention or an endless list of things to improve, but a little more curiosity about the world around us. A willingness to be surprised, to do things imperfectly, to appreciate what we already have, and to leave a few corners of our lives wonderfully unoptimized.

Keep the planners, the goals, and the routines that make your days run smoothly. Just remember to leave some blank spaces for the things you couldn’t possibly plan.

The magic of a well-built life isn’t in how efficiently we manage it. It’s in everything we get to experience along the way.
