Today I’m dropping some Halloween costume ideas for the IT girls who are looking for something fresh and unique.
It’s nearly impossible to come up with a completely never-been-done-before costume (nor do I think it’s necessary!) but the looks I’m sharing today are a bit more obscure and will definitely have you standing out from the crowd with some major main character energy at this year’s Halloween parties.
Hopefully, this post inspires you to think outside the box, head to the thrift store to hunt for some (if not all) of the elements, and pull together a fun and exciting look from head to toe. Tip: shop your closet for ideas and see if anything jumps out at you. There’s likely already something in there to inspire a unique costume idea.
To come up with your own unique costume idea, get your imagination flowing by considering things like metaphors, idioms, witty sayings, puns, or more conceptual looks (like a Midnight Moon Siren, for example), and then see how you can interpret them into an outfit – perhaps with the added help of accessories and unexpected props.
But, if you’re not in the mood to come up with your own unique and creative costume… I’ve come up with the following 5 looks you can copy instead!
1. Coquette Cowgirl Costume
Tap into your flirty feminine energy with a Coquette Cowgirl costume. This look is all about mixing stereotypically Western elements with girly and frilly details. Think bows tied to the sides of boots, a crystal fringe bandana, and a cowgirl hat made out of a daintier material like crochet. If you enjoy the DIY route, consider painting cute little flowers or hearts on a pair of inexpensive boots or a leather belt.
Go for an extra flirty vibe with the outfit by pairing a gingham printed top with a pair of layered ruffled shorts. Or wear a denim skirt with a frilly white lace top. Make a simple bow choker necklace by tying a thin satin ribbon or piece of lace around your neck, adding a heart shaped charm if you can find one.
For the hairstyle, go with pigtails, or pigtail braids, tied off with satin bows.
Keep the makeup dewy and fresh with extra blush on the cheeks and nose. Add some light pink and purple shimmers for a pop of color and sparkle. To go the extra mile with the details, create a pink and white lace tip manicure – press-on nails are the way to go if you want to skip a visit to the nail salon.
Take the look up a notch and really drive in the overall theme by carrying around a small horse plushy, once again adorned with pink or white bows.

2. Bad News Costume
You’re sure to make a bold statement at any Halloween party by walking in as the Bad News of the night. This costume is meant to be a literal interpretation of the words, and will definitely have you standing out in a crowd. Tap into your bad girl energy with devilish accessories and a rocker-chic aesthetic.
For the outfit, you can DIY a dress using real newspaper. Start with a simple nude strapless slip dress, then wrap the newspaper around your body in several layers, using a wide leather belt to secure it in place. Add strong hold double sided tape wherever needed for extra security. You could also opt to wear an item of clothing with a newspaper print (this seems to be trending currently so there are quite a few options out there), and pair it with a leather mini skirt.
For the hair, create a funky faux mohawk or space buns, and carefully add large safety pins to drive in the punk energy. Or, create a slick back low pony and completely cover your head with silver hair clips for a more editorial vibe.
Keep the makeup messy and grunge with a dark smokey eye and deep red (or black) lipstick.
Finish off the costume with attention to detail: a black and silver coffin-shaped mani, some metal spiked jewelry, and skull & crossbones accessories.

3. Pearl Of Wisdom Costume
Of all the looks in this post, I’d say this is the one I’m most excited to share. I have honestly never seen a Pearl of Wisdom costume done before and I love how chic and feminine it is. Another literal take on words, this look is all about mixing an academic aesthetic with pearly textures and tones.
For the outfit, go with classic tailored pieces like a pleated skirt and blazer combination. Or keep it a bit more casual with a cable knit cardigan. You could also take the look towards a more studious route and incorporate a university sweater or varsity jacket. Add a pair of pearl embellished socks and loafers or a Mary Jane shoe.
Pull your hair back into sleek in a bun and go for a neutral makeup look with pearlescent finishes on the eyes and cheeks. Finish the glam with pearl gems glued on the face and hair in clusters. Add a pair of thick rimmed reading glasses for that wise and well-read vibe.
To enhance the theme further, you could carry around a stack of books (perhaps the hollow decorative kind for comfort), or wear a purse shaped like a shell or book. The key here is to make sure you are equally representing both sides of “pearl” and “wisdom.”
Finish the ensemble with loads of layered pearl jewelry and a fresh set of pearlescent nails.

4. Chef’s Kiss Costume
You’ll be on fire all night in a Chef’s Kiss costume. This look is perfect for a red hot moment at any Halloween party. Show off your girly glam side, paired with kitchen and food accessories for a funny and cute look that is sure to have people smiling.
The outfit is super simple: a red mini dress, and a pair of pointed toe pumps. Then add a half apron and a chef hat.
Create your favorite glam makeup look and add red and pink rhinestones for that extra eye-catching sparkle. Incorporate lots of lipstick kisses on the cheeks, forehead, neck, and shoulders. You could enlist a special someone to help with this or use temporary tattoos to ensure they stay in place all night. Don’t forget to add a bold red lip to finish the makeup look.
Add an extra layer of fun to the costume with food themed accessories and jewelry. You could even choose to tote around a red pot as your “handbag” for the night. Or get crafty with a creative DIY strawberry basket or mini sequined ketchup tote bag. Add a wooden spoon or cooking utensil to your look, and you’re all set for a spicy night ahead.

5. Lava Lamp Costume
Why not travel back in time and get groovy in a Lava Lamp costume? This one would be extra fun to thrift items for, as you’re sure to run into some acrylic bangles or retro pieces at second-hand stores. This costume paired with a joyful and energetic attitude will have you twisting the night away.
The outfit is loosely based on the whirling globs of a lava lamp, so you definitely want to be on the hunt for items that have a marbled, tie die effect with a few swirling colors. A bell bottomed jumpsuit would be ideal, but you could also opt for a swirled mesh top (also trending now and widely available) and a silver skirt. Finish the outfit with a pair of silver boots to mimic the chrome base of the lava lamp, or go for a brightly colored patent leather option for a more monochromatic vibe.
You could also incorporate the chrome areas of the lava lamp with silver jewelry (particularly ones with liquid drippy shapes). Add a metallic handbag and marbled retro eyewear. These details will also emulate the flowing movement of the lava.
Keep the hair classically 60’s with a deep side part, bouffant, and flipped out ends. Finish with a bold headband in white or a contrasting color. Makeup wise, add brightly colored eyeshadow and a cut crease for that signature 60’s Twiggy look, complete with extra bold bottom lashes and complimenting lip color.
If you want to include a custom manicure, try your hand at the trendy multi-colored aura effect nail art, also available in press-on form if you’re tight on time.
