Holiday Girls’ Night Ideas for December

In this post, I’ll be sharing holiday girls’ night ideas for December that feel festive, cozy, and a little more special than your usual get-together.

A holiday girls’ night is the perfect excuse to slow down during the busiest month of the year, gather your favorite people, and make an ordinary December evening feel a little more special.

December tends to fill up quickly with work parties, family gatherings, shopping, travel, and all of the little things that come along with the holiday season. Somewhere between all of that, carving out one night specifically for your girlfriends can feel like a much-needed reset.

And it doesn’t necessarily have to mean throwing another traditional Christmas party.

A girls’ night can be as simple as cocktails and ornament swapping, an at-home perfume night, fondue around the table, or everyone showing up in pajamas for a nostalgic holiday movie marathon. The idea is to choose one simple activity and build the evening around it.

The best girls’ nights usually combine something to eat or drink, something to do, and an atmosphere that feels intentional without being overly planned.

Below, you’ll find holiday girls’ night ideas that range from festive and social to cozy and low-key, depending on the kind of December evening you have in mind.

10 Holiday Girls’ Night Ideas for December

1. Holiday Cocktail Night

A holiday cocktail night is probably one of the easiest ways to turn an ordinary December evening into something that feels a little more festive.

Instead of planning a full dinner, make the drinks the main event. Choose two or three seasonal cocktails and create a small menu for the night. A cranberry French 75, pomegranate spritz, spiced pear cocktail, rosemary gin fizz, or peppermint espresso martini would all work beautifully for December.

Set everything up on a bar cart, kitchen island, or dining table where guests can gather around and make drinks throughout the night. Coupe glasses, cocktail picks, pretty napkins, bowls of citrus, cranberries, rosemary, and a few candles are really all you need to make the setup feel intentional.

Keep the food equally simple. A cheese board, baked brie, olives, crostini, nuts, and a few small desserts work especially well because everyone can graze throughout the evening rather than sitting down for a formal meal.

You could even turn the cocktails into the activity by asking everyone to bring one interesting ingredient or garnish. Put everything together and experiment until you create your own signature cocktail for the night. Give it a ridiculous name, write down the recipe, and suddenly you have a drink that belongs specifically to your friend group.

Add a really good playlist, dim the lights, and let this one feel more like your own little holiday cocktail bar than a traditional Christmas party.

If you host often, this is also a good excuse to build a small collection of cocktail essentials that you’ll use long after December. A good cocktail shaker is the first thing I’d buy, followed by a double-sided jigger, long cocktail spoon, and a set of glass coupes. For the holiday setup, I also love festive cocktail picks for cherries, cranberries, citrus twists, and rosemary sprigs. None of these are overly theme-specific, so you can continue using them for dinner parties and girls’ nights throughout the year.

2. Ornament Exchange Girls’ Night

An ornament exchange is a fun alternative to Secret Santa, especially if your friend group has reached the point where everyone already has enough candles, mugs, and random little Christmas gifts.

Ask each guest to bring one wrapped ornament within a set price range. You can encourage everyone to find something beautiful, funny, handmade, vintage-inspired, or strangely specific to your group rather than choosing a generic Christmas ornament.

The exchange itself can be as structured or casual as you want. Draw numbers and let everyone choose a wrapped ornament, play it like a traditional White Elephant exchange, or simply place everything under the tree and take turns choosing.

For something slightly more sentimental, have everyone select an ornament that reminds them of someone else in the group without revealing who it is for. Once everyone arrives, take turns opening the ornaments and guessing who each one was chosen for.

Let the Christmas tree become the main decor for the evening. Add candles, bows, ribbon, greenery, and a few metallic details around the room rather than trying to create an entirely separate party setup.

Champagne or wine, baked brie, Christmas cookies, and small appetizers are enough for the menu. The ornament exchange gives the evening a built-in activity, so everything else can stay relaxed.

The best part is that everyone leaves with something they can add to their tree every year. If this becomes an annual tradition, your Christmas tree slowly starts collecting little reminders of girls’ nights from years past.

If an ornament exchange becomes an annual tradition, it’s also worth having an ornament storage organizer with individual dividers rather than wrapping your favorites in tissue paper and hoping for the best. I especially like the tray-style organizers because each ornament has its own compartment, which is helpful for all of the more delicate glass, handmade, or sentimental ornaments you start collecting over the years. This would also make a surprisingly practical gift for the friend who takes her Christmas tree very seriously.

3. Perfume Night

A perfume night feels a little unexpected, which is exactly what makes it such a fun girls’ night idea.

Ask everyone to bring two or three perfumes from their own collection and create a miniature fragrance bar where everyone can smell, test, compare, and layer different scents throughout the evening. I’d put everything on a pretty mirrored vanity tray, which instantly makes a random collection of perfume bottles feel like an intentional fragrance bar.

Set out paper fragrance strips and pens so everyone can write down the name of each perfume they try. You could loosely organize the fragrances by scent family, with sections for floral, fruity, gourmand, woody, amber, fresh, and spicy fragrances.

For December, especially lean into warm scents with notes of vanilla, amber, sandalwood, cherry, tobacco, rose, incense, tonka bean, musk, and woods. There is something about those deeper fragrances that feels especially appropriate when the weather gets cooler and everything becomes a little moodier.

The fun part is experimenting with layering. Try combining perfumes that you would never normally wear together and see what happens. At the end of the night, everyone can choose their favorite fragrance combination and give it its own name.

You could also make little cards with different winter fragrance personalities like The Romantic, The Muse, The Socialite, or The Minimalist and have everyone decide which one fits them best.

Keep the food light so the fragrance remains the focus. Champagne, chocolate, berries, macarons, and small appetizers would all fit the atmosphere beautifully.

For a thoughtful take-home element, pick up inexpensive sample atomizers before the party. If everyone is comfortable sharing, guests can take home tiny samples of fragrances they discovered and loved that night.

It feels part beauty night, part cocktail party, and part sleepover conversation, which is a very good combination for December.

4. Favorite Things Party

A favorite-things party is especially fun around the holidays because it combines a girls’ night with gift giving without requiring everyone to shop for individual people.

Before the party, choose a price limit that works for your group. Something around $10 to $20 keeps the idea accessible and encourages everyone to think creatively rather than trying to find an impressive gift.

Each person chooses one thing they genuinely love. It could be a beauty product they constantly repurchase, a favorite lip product, candle, coffee, kitchen find, hair accessory, notebook, snack, mini perfume, or some oddly specific little item they have been recommending to everyone all year.

For a smaller group, everyone could bring enough of their favorite item for each guest. For a larger group, ask everyone to bring three identical items and draw names during the party.

The best part is actually hearing everyone explain why they chose their item. There is something much more fun about receiving a $12 product your friend swears changed her life than receiving another generic holiday gift.

Decorate with bows, tissue paper, ribbons, gift tags, and stacks of wrapped packages so the gifts themselves become part of the party setup.

You could also hand out little cards at the beginning of the night and have everyone anonymously vote for categories like “Most Likely to Become My New Obsession” or “Thing I Never Knew I Needed.”

Add wine, cocktails, appetizers, and a Christmas playlist and you have a very easy holiday gathering that still feels special.

5. Fondue Night

Fondue feels inherently nostalgic, cozy, and slightly indulgent, which makes it perfect for December.

Instead of preparing a traditional dinner, make the entire evening revolve around the fondue pot. Start with cheese fondue and set out bowls of bread, apples, roasted potatoes, broccoli, pretzels, sausage, and cornichons for dipping.

Once everyone has had enough cheese, clear the table and bring out chocolate fondue for dessert. Strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, pound cake, brownies, cookies, and pretzels give everyone plenty of options without requiring much actual baking.

Because everyone naturally gathers around the same table, fondue also solves one of the biggest hosting questions: what are we actually going to do all night?

The food becomes the activity.

Keep the table intimate with taper candles, cloth napkins, wine glasses, and vintage serving pieces. You don’t need much additional Christmas decor because the warm lighting and overflowing bowls of food already create that cozy holiday feeling.

Pair everything with wine, mulled wine, a kir royale, or a simple winter sangria.

This idea works especially well for a smaller group of friends because everyone is sitting around the same table, passing plates, dipping things into the fondue, and naturally talking throughout the night.

If you don’t already own one, an electric fondue pot makes this night much easier because you can keep the cheese or chocolate warm directly on the table rather than constantly moving everything back to the stove. I’d choose one with adjustable temperature control and color-coded fondue forks so everyone can keep track of their own. If you’re planning to serve both cheese and chocolate, having a second small chocolate fondue pot is also surprisingly convenient. You can bring dessert out immediately without stopping to wash and reset the original pot.

6. Nostalgic Holiday Movie Night

There is nothing groundbreaking about watching Christmas movies in December, but turning it into an actual girls’ night makes it feel completely different.

Rather than simply putting on whatever holiday movie happens to be streaming, lean all the way into the nostalgia.

Ask everyone to arrive in pajamas, cozy socks, or oversized sweaters and choose movies that everyone remembers watching growing up. Home Alone, The Santa Clause, The Grinch, and Elf can lean more nostalgic, while The Holiday, Love Actually, or The Family Stone feel perfect once the cocktails come out.

Pile soft throw blankets and pillows around the living room and keep the lighting almost entirely to Christmas lights, lamps, and candles.

Set up a little concession area with popcorn, candy, cookies, hot chocolate, and a few nostalgic movie-theater snacks. Include reusable movie-theater popcorn tubs instead of standard bowls. You could also make one holiday cocktail for everyone to drink during the movie, or create a spiked hot chocolate bar with marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint, and chocolate shavings.

If your group can never agree on a movie, have everyone anonymously submit their favorite Christmas movie before the party. Write them on slips of paper and draw one or two from a bowl when everyone arrives.

The point of this night isn’t necessarily to sit silently and watch three movies from beginning to end. Put something nostalgic on in the background, pour the drinks, make popcorn, and allow everyone to talk through half of it anyway.

7. Christmas Pajamas + Breakfast for Dinner

If you want something even more casual than a traditional dinner party, invite everyone over in Christmas pajamas and serve breakfast for dinner.

This is one of those ideas that feels intentionally unserious, which can be a welcome contrast to all of the more formal dinners and holiday events happening throughout December.

Create a breakfast spread with mini pancakes, French toast, croissants, cinnamon rolls, bacon, breakfast potatoes, fruit, and mini quiches. Most of it can be prepared ahead of time or kept warm, so you aren’t standing over the stove making individual pancakes while everyone else is having fun.

You could even serve everything buffet-style and let everyone eat on the couch rather than setting a formal dining table. If you’re serving pancakes or French toast buffet-style, an electric warming tray is also incredibly useful because you can make everything before guests arrive instead of cooking while everyone else is already eating.

A mimosa or bellini bar fits perfectly with the theme. Set out a few different juices along with berries, citrus slices, and sparkling wine and let everyone make their own.

For the mimosa bar, set the juices out in matching glass carafes rather than leaving the cartons on the counter. It is such a small change, but it immediately makes the entire setup look more intentional. Add small label cards for each juice, a champagne bucket for keeping bottles cold, and a few bowls filled with berries and sliced citrus.

Put a Christmas movie on in the background, play card games afterward, or add a small ornament or favorite-things exchange if you want another activity.

It essentially combines brunch, a sleepover, and Christmas morning into one very low-pressure girls’ night.

8. Holiday Craft + Cocktails Night

A holiday craft night can be genuinely cute as long as you choose the right project.

Instead of covering the table with dozens of random supplies and trying to recreate an elementary school Christmas craft night, choose one project that everyone will actually want to take home.

Velvet bow ornaments, beaded ornaments, air-dry clay ornaments, mini wreaths, dried orange garlands, charm necklaces, personalized stockings, or decorated taper candles would all work well.

Set up the supplies before everyone arrives so the craft table itself becomes part of the decor. Small bowls filled with beads, ribbons, charms, paintbrushes, and other materials can look surprisingly pretty when everything is organized together.

Keep cocktails and snacks on a separate table so food, glue, beads, and paint aren’t all competing for space.

Once everyone has a drink and understands what they are making, the craft becomes something to do with your hands while everyone talks. It gives the night just enough structure without forcing everyone into scheduled activities.

And unlike a traditional party favor, everyone leaves with something they actually made.

9. Holiday Dessert Tasting Night

December is one of the few times of year when you can confidently invite people over and then decide to skip dinner entirely.

For a holiday dessert tasting night, ask each friend to bring one favorite holiday dessert. It can be homemade, picked up from a favorite bakery, a family recipe, or something they simply look forward to every December.

Cut everything into smaller tasting portions so everyone can try a little bit of each dessert without committing to an entire slice of cake seven times over.

Set the table with cake stands, silver trays, berries, chocolates, cookies, ribbons, and candlelight so it feels abundant and slightly over-the-top.

Then add coffee, espresso, espresso martinis, dessert wine, or hot chocolate.

If you want to turn it into more of an activity, make simple tasting cards and have everyone secretly rate their favorites. You could also keep the desserts anonymous at first and have everyone guess who brought what.

For a more traditional variation, turn the same concept into a cookie exchange and ask everyone to bring enough of one cookie to taste during the party and take home afterward.

It is simple to host, everyone contributes, and no one has to cook an entire dinner.

10. One Last Girls’ Night of the Year

Somewhere between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is that strange little stretch of December when nobody really knows what day it is.

It also happens to be the perfect time for one last girls’ night of the year.

Make this one slightly dressier than the others. Think candlelight, champagne coupes, silver details, disco balls, metallic accents, and a playlist that starts relaxed and slowly gets louder as the evening goes on.

Instead of making the night about formal resolutions or turning it into a full vision-board party, use the end of the year as a loose theme.

Set out a few cards with prompts about the past year. Ask everyone to write down their favorite thing that happened, something they want to leave behind, something they want more of next year, their favorite discovery of the year, or even a prediction for someone else in the group.

Drop the cards into a bowl throughout the evening and read them together later.

You could also ask everyone to bring their favorite photo from the year, share the funniest thing that happened, or choose one song that belongs on the unofficial soundtrack of the past twelve months.

Serve champagne, espresso martinis, and small bites rather than a formal meal and let the night evolve naturally.

It feels reflective without becoming overly serious and festive without requiring you to throw an actual New Year’s Eve party.

Making a Holiday Girls’ Night Feel Special

The nice thing about these ideas is that none of them require an elaborate party setup.

The difference between simply having friends over and creating a memorable holiday girls’ night usually comes down to a few thoughtful details.

Turn off the overhead lights and use lamps, candles, and Christmas lights instead. Put together a playlist before everyone arrives. Serve one drink that feels specific to the night. Use the glasses you normally save for special occasions. Add bows to something unnecessarily ordinary. Put snacks into actual serving bowls instead of leaving them in their packaging.

Most importantly, give the night one central idea.

You don’t need an ornament exchange, perfume bar, fondue dinner, craft project, cocktail tasting, and Secret Santa happening at the same party. Choosing one activity gives the evening enough direction while still leaving plenty of room for everyone to actually hang out.

Holiday Girls’ Night Ideas for December

December gatherings don’t have to be elaborate to feel special. Some of the best holiday girls’ nights are built around one simple idea that gives everyone an excuse to get together.

An ornament exchange can turn into an annual tradition. A perfume night turns everyone’s beauty collection into the entertainment. Fondue makes dinner interactive without requiring an elaborate menu. Even a movie night feels completely different when you add pajamas, cocktails, nostalgic snacks, and a room glowing with Christmas lights.

Choose the idea that feels most like your friend group and add a few thoughtful details around it.

The goal doesn’t necessarily have to be throwing another holiday party. Sometimes it is simply creating one really good December night with your friends before the season disappears.
