The Knot Bag Sewing Pattern:
First things first, letโs create a pattern! You can use pattern paper with pre-measured dots for ease, or get creative with kraft or wrapping paper.
Step-by-step Instructions:
1. Cut Your Fabric:
Begin by cutting your fabrics according to the pattern. Remember, you’ll need one for the outer fabric and one for the lining. The contrast creates a unique, personalized look!
2. Sew the Handles and Bottom:
With right sides facing, use a 3/8โ seam allowance to stitch the tops of the handles and the bottom part (from notch to notch on your pattern). Repeat this step with the lining fabric.
3. Create a Squared Bottom:
To add structure, sew the corners in. Find each corner, mark 1โ down at a diagonal line, and sew along that line. Trim the excess fabric, leaving about 1/4โ.
4. Prep the Seams:
Press the seams open on the top of the handles.
5. Assemble the Bag:
Turn the lining right side out and insert it into the main fabric, ensuring right sides are touching. Align the top handle seams, and pin along the top opening curve (the U shape).
6. Sew the Opening Curve:
Stitch all around the top opening curve. Carefully clip along the inside seam allowance of the top opening curve to ensure it lays flat. Repeat with the lining.
7. Turn the Bag Inside Out:
Reach into the open side of one strap, pull the lining fabric through completely, and then tuck the lining back into the main fabric.
8. Press and Topstitch:
Line up the seams, press along the opening curve, and inside the handles. Optional: for a polished finish, topstitch along the opening curve.
9. Finish the Handles:
Fold the raw edges of the outside of each handle, pin together, and topstitch along the outside of the handles.
10. Tie the Knot:
Pull the longer handle through the shorter one and loop through once again to create a secure knot.
You’ve just crafted a stunning reversible fabric knot bag. Whether you’re gifting, styling an event, or simply decorating your home, these bags are sure to impress. Happy sewing, and enjoy the joy of creating something beautiful and sustainable!
