When it comes to Halloween, it just doesn’t get more classic than a fairy costume. I love costumes that lean toward a whimsical aesthetic and allow for creativity and personal expression.
One of the most enchanting aspects of any fairy costume is the wings, and making your own DIY cellophane fairy wings can add a personal touch that store-bought versions just can’t match.
Not only are these wings stunning and iridescent, but they’re also surprisingly simple to make with a few simple materials. Hereโs a step-by-step guide to help you craft your own cellophane fairy wings and create an unforgettable fairy Halloween look.
DIY Cellophane Fairy Wings & Costume
Materials
- poster board or scrap piece of a cardboard box
- Cellophane roll
- 12 gauge galvanized steel wire
- 16 gauge wire
- Wire cutters
- Silver aluminum tape
- Spray adhesive
- Iron and towel
- Candle or lighter
- Scissors
How to Make Ethereal Cellophane Fairy Wings
Shape the Wings
Begin by drawing your desired wing shape onto the cardboard. You can create any wing pattern you like, from simple oval shapes to more intricate designs.
Next, mold your galvanized steel wire into the shape of your wings using the drawing as a guideline. Use pieces of tape to hold it down in places as needed. Ensure that the ends of the wire are securely twisted together to maintain the shape.
Make sure to leave long pieces of steel wire at the base of each wing so that they can be attached later on.
Add the veining inside the wings using 16 gauge wire. Again, twist the wire together tightly and use pieces of layered silver aluminum tape to secure the wire pieces as needed.
Cover with Cellophane
Once your wing frames are ready, cut a piece of cellophane large enough to cover each wing. Spray one side of the cellophane lightly with spray adhesive and then press the sticky side onto the wire frame.
Repeat this process for the other side of the wing, effectively sandwiching the wire between two layers of cellophane. Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area or outside to avoid inhaling any harmful fumes.
Trim any excess cellophane to match the shape of the wings.
Cover the wings with a towel, and use an iron to apply heat to the wings. be careful not to stay in one spot for too long and use a low heat setting.
Finishing Touches
Use a candle or lighter to slowly burn the edges of the cellophane that are hanging off the edges.
Attach the two wings using the long pieces of galvanized steel wire at the base of the wings. Overlap the wire and wrap them tightly with aluminum tape in several layers. Then bend the center part up on either side to create a squared-off U shape. This is the part that will get tucked into the back of a costume to secure the wings.
Completing Your Fairy Costume:
Once your wings are ready, the rest of your fairy costume can be assembled with a bit of creativity. For the classic Tinkerbell look, start with a green dress, and add the accessories.
For the shoes, I opted for a pair of silver pumps and attached white pom poms using hair clips for a temporary nod to the Tinkerbell aesthetic.

Be sure to layer on some sparkly jewelry and a green ribbon tied around the neck. For the makeup, create a shimmery look with lots of highlight and rhinestone face gems.
Finish the look with a top knot bun and a small tiara hair accessory. You might even consider adding a wand or a small bag of โpixie dustโ to add an extra layer of magic to your look.
