As Halloween approaches, it’s the perfect time to get creative with some easy DIY projects that can add a touch of spooky charm to your home decor.
Today Iβm sharing my take on the viral DIY painted ghost art in a frame. This project is perfect for crafters of all skill levels and can be a fun way to repurpose old frames and artwork.
The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and the ease of finding materials. Frames can often be picked up at a thrift store, or you may already have some lying around. For the artwork, consider something with a spooky landscape or a vintage house scene. You can also find pre-framed art at thrift stores, use pages from old calendars, tear out a page from an art book, or simply print something at home.

Easy DIY Painted Ghost Art
Materials
- An old frame (easily found at a thrift store or reused from around your house)
- Artwork (look for spooky landscapes or traditional vintage vibes; sources can include thrift stores, old calendars, art books, or prints from your home printer)
- White acrylic paint
- Craft paint brushes
- Matte Mod Podge
- Black pen, marker, or paint for ghost eyes
- Scissors
Thrift Flip Halloween Home Decor: Painting a spooky ghost
Prepare Your Artwork: Start by tracing and cutting out the piece of art to fit the frame. Make sure itβs clean and free of any dust or debris.
Paint the Ghost: Using white acrylic paint, create a ghost by painting an upside-down U shape with a wavy base at the bottom. To give your ghost a slightly transparent, ethereal look, dilute the paint with a bit of water. This will help the ghost blend seamlessly into the background of the artwork. Add some black paint to create shadows and add dimension. Donβt worry about making it perfect; part of the charm of this project is its whimsical, imperfect look.
Add the Eyes: Once the ghost shape is dry, use a black pen, marker, or paint to add two small black ovals for eyes. Feel free to get creative with the expressions to give your ghost some personality.
Apply Mod Podge: After the paint has dried completely, apply a thin layer of matte Mod Podge over the entire artwork. Use a craft brush to create small brush strokes in random directions. This technique will give your piece the texture of an authentic painting on canvas, especially if your art is printed on smooth paper.
Frame Your Art: Let the Mod Podge dry completely, then place your artwork into the frame. Secure it and you’re all done!
