Today’s ribbon charm bookmark DIY is an easy and customizable craft project that is perfect for book lovers and crafters alike.
This project is ideal for using up old scraps of ribbon and random charms you may have lying around. It’s also a great way to upcycle broken pieces of jewelry, giving them a new life in a unique and functional form.
Personalized ribbon bookmarks make thoughtful gifts for friends and family who love to read, and they can be tailored to suit any personality or style.
One of the best things about this craft is its versatility. You can use a wide variety of ribbonsโsatin, grosgrain, velvet, or even laceโto achieve different looks.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Ribbon Charm Bookmarks
Step 1: Select and Cut the Ribbon
First, determine the final length you want for your bookmark. Cut a piece of ribbon that is twice this length. For example, if you want a bookmark that is 6 inches long, cut a 12-inch piece of ribbon.
Experiment with different ribbon widths and textures to see what works best for your charms and style preferences.
Step 2: Insert the Jump Ring
Fold the ribbon in half and insert a large jump ring or a self-closing clasp at the midpoint. This ring or clasp will serve as the anchor point for your charms.
Step 3: Secure the Loose Ends
Depending on the type of ribbon you’re using, you have a few options to secure the loose ends:
- Simple Knot: For a quick and easy finish, tie a simple knot at the loose ends of the ribbon. Tip: if you find that the edges of your ribbon are fraying, you can carefully seal them with a bit of clear nail polish or use a lighter to gently melt the edges (be very cautious with this method.
- Stitching: For a tidier look, you can stitch the ends together using a needle and matching thread. This method is especially useful for delicate or fray-prone ribbons.
- Ribbon Clamp: For a more polished finish, consider using a ribbon clamp at the ends. These can be found at most craft stores and provide a neat, professional look.
Step 4: Attach the Jump Ring
Secure the jump ring or clasp to the other end of the ribbon with a few simple stitches. Alternatively, you can use a small jump ring to hold it tightly in place. For extra hold, you might want to use a drop of fabric glue in combination with stitching.
Step 5: Add the Charms
Now comes the fun part! Start adding your assorted charms to the jump rings. If you want the option to change charms over time, attach them using lobster clasps. This way, you can mix and match charms to suit your mood or the season.
Get creative – use old pendants from broken jewelry, make tassels out of embroidery thread, or even create tiny pom poms out of yarn. (Check out these posts for more in depth tutorials on: DIY tassels and pom poms)
I also decided to upcycle an old pearl bracelet that didn’t fit my wrist. The bracelet had been in my bead and craft collection for a while. I simply removed the clasp closure and used one of the existing metal hoops on one end to add my own charms. This method can also be applied to a broken chain, leftover rope, or any other material you have on hand.
