Having a long term relationship is beautiful and beyond fulfilling. But, at times life ebbs and flows in a way that makes it hard work to stay connected. No two relationships are alike, but we all experience phases in life where we may find it tough to connect to our partners on an emotional level. Deepening our bond and building emotional intimacy is crucial to creating a loving and lasting relationship.
I’m no relationship expert by any means, but my husband and I have been married for 7 years and together for over a decade, so this post is simply my 2 cents on the topic.
Why it’s important to take the time to reconnect in your relationship
Life can be unpredictable and busy seasons tend to creep in without warning, so avoid drifting apart from your partner by taking the time to reconnect regularly.
When we get caught up in the busyness of life, it’s easy to forget to prioritize our relationships. However, it’s important to make time for each other, even if it’s just a few moments each day to check in and connect emotionally. This could be as simple as sharing how your day went or expressing your feelings about something that’s been on your mind. Setting aside time to reconnect with your partner can help to keep the spark alive and strengthen your bond.
Reconnecting can take many forms, from simply having a meaningful conversation to planning a date night or weekend getaway. Making it a priority to spend quality time with your partner, will help cultivate a strong and loving relationship.
Ways to reconnect with your significant other:
Be deliberate with scheduled dates. Lock them into your calendar ahead of time or keep a consistent schedule (ex: every Thursday night is date night). If you’re feeling stuck in a date night rut, you can use tools like this card deck or this date night idea book to inspire some fun and fresh ideas that you can pull from at random to keep things exciting.
Aim for screen-free quality time. It’s important to find activities that you both enjoy and that allow you to focus on each other, without the distractions of everyday life. Be in the present moment to make room for conversations about anything and everything (this can still be light and fun) the key is to keep your phones away and skip out on the TV show binge session. Sometimes, it helps to have a few games and activities on hand that are geared towards couples like this card game or this datenight cook book.
Experience a new โfirst.โ This is especially important for couples who have been together for a long time. After the honeymoon phase is in the distant past, and all those exciting relationship โfirstsโ seem to be long behind you, consider making plans to experience something new together. It could be something as simple as checking out that new axe throwing place, or going to a new restaurant with cuisine neither of you has ever tried before. By experiencing something new together, you’ll create bonding memories that will strengthen your relationship and help you to grow closer together.
Show appreciation and gratitude. Take time to express your love and appreciation for your significant other. This can be through small gestures like leaving a quick love note or going out of your way to do something special for them. Consider starting a couples journal to help hold you accountable and document your relationshipโs check-ins over time.
Prioritize intimacy. Physical touch and intimacy are important aspects of a relationship. Make time for intimate moments and prioritize each other’s needs and desires.
Ask questions during quality time. Practice active listening. Listening is an essential part of communication, and active listening involves paying attention to what your significant other is saying without interrupting or judging. This can help you understand their perspective and build a deeper connection. When your partner is speaking, show empathy and understanding, especially when they share their thoughts and feelings on heavier topics, which are inevitably going to arise over a long term relationship.
