Fall and winter nights are ideal for cozying up with a warm mug of something steamy. In today’s post, I’m sharing my all-time favorite hot toddy recipe. With just a handful of ingredients, you can quickly whip up a delicious and comforting drink that’s equal parts sweet, spicy, and warm.

The hot toddy is a timeless classic that combines the soothing qualities of hot tea with the boozy kick of spirits to create a boldly flavored cocktail, often enjoyed as a seasonal drink. It can be adapted to many flavor palettes by adding fresh ingredients like apples, and oranges, as well as spices like cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.
Whether you’re curled up by the fireplace with a good book, or hosting a laid-back gathering with your friends and family, this hot toddy recipe (with a spiced apple twist) is sure to add a touch of warmth and cheer to your evening.
Spiced Apple Cider Hot Toddy Recipe
INGREDIENTS | 1 serving
1 cup spiced apple cider
1 1/2 oz whiskey
1 tsp honey
1/2 oz lemon juice
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp sugar
pinch of nutmeg
1 star anise pod
1-2 apple slices
- Add sugar and ground cinnamon to a small plate or rimmer. Mix well until thoroughly combined.
- Moisten the rim of a heat safe mug (a glass mug is ideal, but any will do!) with a lemon wedge, dip into the cinnamon sugar, and set aside.
- Combine spiced apple cider, cinnamon sticks, and honey in a small pot and heat on the stovetop until a low simmer. Do not bring to a boil.
- Remove from heat and add whiskey, lemon juice, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir well until dissolved.
- Pour into mug and garnish with a star anise pod and an apple slice.
- Enjoy!
Hosting Tip: This recipe makes a single serving, but you can scale it up and make a large batch for a party. Keep it warm in a thermal carafe for your guests to enjoy all night. You can also simplify the recipe by omitting the extra steps for rimming and garnish. Just be sure to include the main ingredients: spiced apple cider, cinnamon sticks, honey, lemon juice, nutmeg, and whiskey.
Make it a mocktail? Replace the whiskey with kombucha or bourbon flavored black tea.
