In today’s post, I’m sharing how to make a holiday simmer pot recipe that combines spices, herbs, and other ingredients to create a delightful blend of fragrances that will fill your home with a cozy warm aroma for hours on end without using artificial fragrance. Don’t worry, we still love a good candle around here!
If youโre unfamiliar with simmer pots (also often referred to as simmering pots or stovetop potpourri), they are essentially a grouping of ingredients, herbs, spices, and extracts that you combine together with water and leave to simmer in a pot on the stove. Aside from filling the space with a rich aroma, a simmer pot can also help humidify the air making it ideal for the colder fall and winter seasons.
You can essentially make a simmer pot with almost anything you have on hand, including scraps or peels from cut up citrus or other fresh ingredients. Thereโs really no right or wrong way to go about it.
You can also use simmer pots to infuse a bit of kitchen witchery and elemental magic into the energy of your home. Start by setting clear intentions and select specific ingredients with meaningful properties (cleansing them with palo santo as you add them to the pot) for a more ritualistic experience.ย For a complete list of ingredients and their meanings, check out this blog post by the ladies over at Blonde2Brunette!
For the holidays, you can even package the ingredients up in a decorative jar or container (just make sure the ingredients are dried/dehydrated and shelf stable) and add a handwritten label with a list of the ingredients and instructions. A warm and cozy fall holiday simmer pot recipe:
INGREDIENTS

- Pear – abundance, prosperity, nurturing energy
- Orange – insight, abundance, manifestation
- Cranberries – courage, healing, rejuvenation
- Star Anise – psychic abilities, protection, stability

The amount you use of each ingredient is completely up to you and the size of the pot you’ll be simmering in. Simmer pots are highly customizable and you can add more or less of each ingredient depending on how strong you’d like each note to stand out.
HOW TO
Slice the apple, pear, and orange into 1/4 inch slices (you can also use leftover peels or rinds).
Combine all ingredients in a pot and add enough water to cover the ingredients.
Place on stovetop over low/medium heat and stir well.
Bring to a simmer and leave uncovered. This will fill your space with a warm and cozy aroma for hours.
Be sure to keep a watchful eye on the simmer pot, adding more water as it evaporates over time. You can also stir it every so often to revive the different aromatics and bring out new notes in the scent.
If you use food grade ingredients, you can even strain and drink the liquid as a tea.
