Itโs 5 oโclock somewhere. Welcome to Happy Hour: a series where we try unique and exciting cocktails together!
Today’s cocktail is definitely having a major moment lately. The Espresso Martini (originally created in the 1980s by Dick Bradsell in London) has had a recent resurgence in popularity over the past couple of years.
It’s the perfect cocktail to reach for if you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up or want to keep the party going longer. Just one of the reasons why I served it at my new years eve party.
The thought of combining coffee and liquor may seem strange at first, but it’s actually a really great pairing and isn’t as shocking to the tastebuds as it sounds.
The traditional recipe calls for vodka, but of course, there are multitudes of variations to the recipe. Some prefer tequila, and even a splash of coconut!
If you’re curious about making your own at home and don’t have an espresso machine on hand, then be sure to try my “faux” espresso martini recipe. Not a single drop of coffee to brew! The key is to replace the espresso with cold brew coffee. Your favorite store bought version will do the trick. I also use vodka as my liquor of choice because it’s neutral and doesn’t distract from the coffee flavor.
Faux Espresso Martini / Cold Brew Martini
2 oz cold brew coffee (I love this one by Stok)
1.5 – 2 oz coffee liqueur (like the classic by Kahlua) depending on your desired sweetness
2 oz vodka (can’t go wrong with Titos)
- Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
- Shake for 30 seconds until chilled.
- Pour into a martini glass.
- Garnish with 3 coffee beans. It’s said that the 3 coffee beans are meant to represent health, wealth, and happiness.
- Enjoy!
Hosting Tip: This recipe makes a single serving, but you can scale it up and make a large batch for a party. Doesn’t get easier than that! Serve it in a cute carafe and keep the cocktail chilled in an ice bucket. Be sure to have a shaker nearby for single servings as this is what creates the classic layer of foam on the top. Lastly, add a small plate of whole coffee beans for garnish and your guests will enjoy an extra special touch. It’s always all about the details!
Thanks for stopping by for Happy Hour! I’ll be making this a series so stay tuned for more fun cocktail recipes to try in the coming months.
