Tim Burton Halloween Makeup | FrightFemmes 2022 Vol. 5

In this post I’ll be sharing VOL. 5 of our 2022 Halloween makeup and costume inspo series. The theme this week is: TIM BURTON characters

Welcome to VOL.5 of #FrightFemmes Friday! Today is the FINALE post of the 2022 series and, not surprisingly, we’ve already started brainstorming for next year’s looks!

If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:

The @frightfemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.

For this week’s theme, TIM BURTON, we’re excited to share our unique takes on some of the most iconic characters in his filmography, plus a Burton-ified version of a historical icon.

The LOOKS:

+ Caro (Marie Antoinette x Tim Burton)
+ Ruthmarie (Edwina Scissorhands)
+ Laura (Corpse Bride)

Caro – Marie Antoinette x Tim Burton

Kicking things off this week with Caro’s Tim Burton-ified version of Marie Antoinette. I am obsessed with all the layered elements of this look. The more you observe, the more details appear to catch your eye. She tapped into the classic Burton animation style with the nose shape, exaggerated eyes, and upturned brows. Paired with a perfectly styled wig, this look would fit right into the next Tim Burton flick.

Ruthmarie – Edwina Scissorhands

Who knew the female version of Edward Scissorhands could be soooo… alluringly pretty! Ruthmarie captured the essence of this character so perfectly, while making it her own with little tweaks and details. The layered sfx cuts are subtle while still make such a big difference: that to me is a perfectly executed element to these makeup looks. I love her outfit styling so much, and still can’t get over the fact that these scissor hands are a DIY!

Laura – Corpse Bride

To be honest, I’m not typically one to recreate or cosplay an exact character look. But, when we discussed having a TIM BURTON theme for this week, I knew I wanted to attempt the ever-so-popular and iconic Emily from Corpse Bride. Then I saw Ash Levi’s version on Instagram, and it inspired me to lean toward a more glam version of the look. Thankfully, she uploaded a tutorial on her YouTube channel, with a complete step-by-step guide and even links to the exact products she used to achieve the look. I did my best to follow it pretty closely, just changing up a few things with the eye makeup. I will say I’m not as confident with body paint application and felt a little rusty here, but overall I’m super happy with the way this turned out. Continue reading for all the details!

Putting together the Corpse Bride look:

Makeup + Hair:
  • Blue tinted skin – Since this look is more on the “wearable/glam” side, I wanted to give the skin a slight tint of blue versus the typical opaque blue complexion often seen with this. Start with a thin layer of shimmery blue water activated body paint all over the face, neck, and chest. Then place white cream paint on the high points of the face and collar bones. Finish with darker blue body paint in areas for contour: forehead, nose, cheekbones, jawline, sides of the neck, and collarbones. The shimmery blue base should still peek through to give you more of a blue glow. Intensify the glow with a silvery/blue tinted highlighter. This palette is super affordable and has tons of fun highlighter hues.
  • Smokey eye – Using various tones of blue and purple eyeshadows, create a classic smokey eye with a deeper crease and outer V shape. Then apply black winged liner, and top with blue glitter over the entire eyelid. To finish the eyes, cut super long wispy lashes into 12 clumps. Place 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom for each eye.
  • Lips + cheeks – Apply your favorite true red lipstick. Then use a deeper lipliner to contour around the edges of the lips for a pouty effect. To carry the glam element down toward the bottom of the face, apply matching red glitter over the lips. Finish the look with a peachy/pink cream blush applied just above the apples of the cheek… more is more for this one!
  • Skeleton arm – With a white body paint, roughly outline the bones on the shoulder, arms, and hands. If you’re anything like me, you won’t worry about making this perfect or anatomically correct! Just have fun with it. Then fill in the bone shapes with the same white paint. With a fluffy brush, create small brush strokes around the edges of the bones using grey eyeshadow to create more dimension. Complete the skeleton arm by filling in the rest of the areas with black body paint.
  • Blue ombre wig – I really wanted to pair this makeup look with a moody ombre blue wig that had more of a navy blue tone. I found the perfect lace front version of this on Amazon.

Extras: for a more “Tim Burton-esque” effect, add length to the inner corners of the eyebrows to create an exaggerated sad effect and contour the tip of the nose with triangle shapes.

Outfit + Styling:

As per usual, I highly recommend heading to a thrift store to look for all the different elements of this costume. I was lucky to find a strapless cream colored lace dress with a tulle overlay. It had the perfect gauzy effect. I also thrifted a sheer lace curtain that I used to create the veil. To attach the veil, I pleated the short side of the curtain panel and secured it with a safety pin. Then I pushed a hair comb through the safety pin.

For the headpiece, I used dollar store flowers and just tucked them into my wig using bobby pins. If I were to wear this out, I’d secure them to a thin headband using hot glue.

To create the ruffles around the top of the dress, I cut long pieces of wide tulle ribbon and folded them several times for more volume. Then pleated it in three sections, securing it with safety pins. Then use the pins to attach them to the inside of the dress so that the ruffles peek out.

For a more grunge look, I applied some black and brown eyeshadow to the blue tulle and top of the dress. If I were to wear this out, I’d add some more blue tulle or staining to the bottom of the dress and create some tattered/ripped sections. I would also take the time to paint the flowers, giving them a more grey/muted tone.

Pair this costume with a bouquet of dead roses, some allover body glitter spray, and you’re all set for a night out!

And that wraps up our #FrightFemmes 2022 series! Thanks so much for following along and be sure to check out all of the looks from previous weeks below! Stay tuned for next year’s spooky season to enjoy more looks from myself, Caro, and Ruthmarie!
