Welcome to VOL.3 of #FrightFemmes Friday!
If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:
The @frightfemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.
For this week’s theme, FAIRIES + NYMPHS, we primarily focused on glam makeup and DIY accessory headpieces. Enjoy 3 very different fairycore makeup looks that will have you reaching for the glitter palettes!
The LOOKS:
+ Caro (Solstice Fairy)
+ Ruthmarie (Earth Nymph)
+ Laura (Lagoon Fairy)
Caro – Solstice Fairy
Caro is truly the brightest star in the sky this week with her Solstice Fairy look. I love a good monochromatic moment and she is totally delivering with this golden Goddess energy! Her highlight + contour technique creates a stunning sunkissed glow, and the beautiful crystal crown headpiece completes the look perfectly.

Ruthmarie – Earth Nymph
Bringing us equal parts whimsical and fierce is Ruthmarie’s ethereal Earth Nymph. There’s something so mysteriously sexy about a completely blocked out brow. Her choice of shimmery lips adds the perfect amount of glow and brightness. Topped with a gorgeous DIY headpiece, this is one of my favorite looks of the season so far!

Laura – Lagoon Fairy
My look this week is inspired by what I’d imagine a little Lagoon Fairy would look like. A bit sassy and, obviously, covered in water head to toe. I opted for a more traditionally glam makeup look with a winged out smokey eye, and super glossy lips to carry out the “wet” look. This also felt like the perfect time to bring out some face gems and pearls. Another major part of this look is the slicked back wet hair and body oil. I tried a few products to achieve this look in a way that would last for several hours. Continue reading for all the details!

Another element that I really enjoy about the #FrightFemmes series is the portrait photography and photo editing process. These photos were taken against a plain fabric backdrop, but I really wanted to add a painterly lagoon element to the background and a diffused glow for that fairycore aesthetic. I did this using the layer mask feature in Procreate app. Check out the video below for a step-by-step tutorial.

Putting together the Lagoon Fairy look:
Makeup + Hair:
- Glam smokey eye – For this look you’re going to need 3 shades of one color. A palette like this would be perfect to work with! Start by applying the medium shade all over the lid, then apply the darkest shade to the crease and along the lash line on the outer third, in a slight v shape. Next, apply the lightest shade to the inner third of the eyelid. Blend everything together softly so there are no harsh lines. For sparkle, add glitter on the eyelid in various shades that complement the eyeshadow. This glitter palette has tons of colors! In my case, I used a combination of purple, blue, and silver glitter. Lastly, add a winged liner on the outer corner, a bright shimmer on the inner corner + browbone, and wispy corner lashes to complete the look. Tip: mirror the same tones on the bottom lash line to create a cohesive smokey eye.
- Faux bleached brows – This step really changes up your entire look but will have people wondering: what’s different?! It’s a subtle way to really enhance the eye makeup. Take a light concealer and run it through the brows in both directions so that it coats the hair really well. With a clean spoolie brush gently brush them up and out. Set with a clear brow gel.
- Wet lips – Time to bust out the strong lip plumper for this step. I chose to slightly overline the lips and contour under the lower lip for an exaggerated pouty effect. Then applied a ton of layers of plumping lip gloss. This isn’t the most practical or comfortable lip, but I think it really helps tie in the “wet” look. If you’re not into the plumping effect, opt for a super shiny gloss instead.
- Wet hair – To achieve that “wet” hair look that actually lasts all night long, you’re going to need to really commit to layering on the hair products. I started by wetting my hair and applying extra conditioner. Then purposely didn’t completely rinse the conditioner out. This left the hair very silky and weighed down a bit which is the perfect base to add product over. Then I applied a combination of styling cream and extra strength hair serum. Make sure you evenly apply from root to tips. Then set in place using a flexible hold hairspray. Tip: if you’ll be spending the night outdoors, go for humidity resistant products to avoid frizz.
- Face gems – To add extra sparkle, place iridescent face gems and pearls in various sizes on the forehead along the hairline, cheekbones, and along the top and bottom lashlines.
- Body glow – I found that layering a dewy finish body lotion and hair oil/serum was the best combination for that “wet” looking body glow. It also helped keep the hair strands in place. Again, not the most comfortable feeling on the skin, but we’re committing to the vibe here, haha!
Outfit + Materials:
I’d say this week’s look is 90% about the makeup, and 10% about the outfit. However, I knew the vibe just wouldn’t feel complete without a sparkling fairy crown and some iridescent details.
DIY fairy crown:
- craft wire
- assorted charms, beads, or upcycled jewelry
- tacky glue
- jewelry making pliers
- iridescent cellophane
- spray adhesive
- ribbon or elastic
Start by cutting a long piece of craft wire and folding it in half to create the top and bottom layers of the crown, making loops on either end. Then bend and shape the wire as you’d like, and embellish it with charms, gems, rhinestone trim, chain, and/or pieces of upcycled costume jewelry. There are so many ways to customize this!
For the wings, draw a basic wing shape template on a piece of paper, then take the wire and bend it along the drawing to recreate the shape. Make sure to leave a long end of the wire at the base of the wing. These don’t need to be perfect or exact. In fact, I think the more whimsical and imperfect, the better. Next, take a piece of iridescent cellophane large enough to cover the entire wing, and lay it down on a flat surface. Cover the cellophane with a layer of spray adhesive, and press the wing on top. Let dry for a few seconds, and do the same with the other side of the wing. You are essentially sandwiching the wire wing inside 2 layers of cellophane. Once the glue dries, carefully cut around the wire, leaving a small gap of cellophane. Be sure to use spray adhesive outside or in a well ventilated room.
Attach the wings to the headpiece using the long pieces of wire, and you’re set!
For an extra secure fit, you can tie ribbon or an elastic band through the 2 loops on either end of the wire headpiece.
Styling:
To be completely honest, I simply draped a yard of sequin tulle fabric over my body and called it a day for the sake of these photos. However, if I were to wear this look out for Halloween, I’d pair it with an empire waist a-line mini dress in a satin or iridescent fabric, sparkly ballet flats, and use the sequin tulle to make a pair of draped fabric wings.
