The @frightfemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. This week’s theme is LOOKS IN A PINCH – aka last minute Halloween costume ideas!
We wanted to share some simple makeup and costume ideas that you can save for those impromptu plans or party invites! All 3 of our looks feature quick makeup you can achieve using just a few products, and styled outfits with pieces you can easily thrift or pull from your own closet!
The LOOKS:
+ Caro (Nancy from The Craft)
+ Ruthmarie (Barbara Maitland from Beetlejuice)
+ Laura (Punk Skeleton)
Caro – Nancy from The Craft
Caro’s coming at us with her version of Nancy from another CLASSIC 90’s movie, The Craft! Her combination of grunge smokey eyes and dark berry lip is serving just the right amount of wearable Halloween glam! The layered jewelry really pulls the entire look together and I LOVE how this outfit can be created using core pieces you may already have in your closet.

Ruthmarie – Barbara Maitland from Beetlejuice
Continuing with the classic movie trend, here’s Ruthmarie as Barbara from Beetlejuice, ever heard of it?! I am loving her use of slight contouring and rosy cheeks to create an effortlessly pretty 80’s inspired fresh face. I would honestly recreate this look to wear on any given day! With a quick trip to the thrift store and a DIY Handbook for the Recently Deceased prop, her entire look came together so seamlessly!

Laura – Punk Skeleton
For today’s LOOKS IN A PINCH theme, I wanted to challenge myself to create a skull makeup look using one single product: red face paint. This simplified half face design is much quicker to accomplish because you don’t need to focus on creating symmetry. You can skip the tedious shading and color blending, and instead draw quick lines, dots, and details to add dimension. No need to worry about perfect placement or correct anatomy… just have fun with it! You can also create this skull over any existing makeup you may already be wearing. Just remove the makeup from one eye, and then draw the skull design directly on top. Perfect for an after work gathering or super last minute party invite!
This skull makeup can be done in any color, with pretty much any outfit or costume. I felt that the red skull paired perfectly with a more punk aesthetic, so I took the rest of the styling in that direction. For a more cohesive look, I kept the colors in a red/pink palette from head to toe. This would also look really cool with a fully monochromatic red outfit.

Putting together the Punk Skeleton look:
Makeup + Hair:
- Sketchy skull – For this look, you really only need one product. You can create the entire skull design using pencil eyeliner, lipliner, gel liner, or face paint and a small detailing brush. Start by outlining the general skull shapes around the cheekbone, jawline, eye socket, and temple, then fill in the areas. For a sketchy look, add extra lines, dots, and dashes around the larger areas. Keep things super simple with a flat wash of one single color, no shading or blending required!
- Safety Pin Buns – For the hairstyle, I created a half-up halo of 3 buns, and (carefully!) added 3 rows of large safety pins directly to my hair.
If you have a bit more time to work with try these extra tips:
- Lip detail – Amp up the look with a more interesting lip. Create a scalloped edge design for a different approach to teeth. Or add chunky glitter and gemstones in a matching color on top of the lips.
- Lashes + brows – I attempted to create a fully monochromatic look by applying red mascara on the skull eye. However, a pair of dramatic red eyelashes would have made a bigger impact. I also think blocking the brow out in the same red tone would really help tie the entire look together.

Easy DIY:
Nothing says punk like large silver spikes. I already had these in my stash and decided to DIY a wrapped choker necklace using a red skinny belt. I first checked to see if the belt would comfortably wrap around my neck, and then simply screwed the spikes into the existing belt holes. The best part is that this is completely reversible! You can just remove the spikes after and use them for another project down the road, with zero damage done to the belt. Extra DIY idea: make a spiked headband using a similar method. Just find a piece of sturdy leather or ribbon, create small evenly spaced holes, and screw on the spikes.
Styling:
What I love most about this last minute look is that you can pull things you already own from your closet to style an outfit based on any aesthetic. To keep the look somewhat monochromatic, I played off the red and pink color palette of my marbled mesh top and paired the look with pink cargo pants, and maroon combat boots. I then added chunky leather accessories with studs, grommets, and chains to really drive in the punk aesthetic.
