This Mediterranean inspired veggie platter (also known as a mezze) makes a great appetizer, potluck dish, or grazing board for your next get together. It’s the perfect vegetarian alternative to the classic charcuterie board (click here for my ultimate guide to creating the perfect board, every time!) and may even entice the veggie-haters of a crowd with its array of bright colors and fresh aromas.
Plus, since there’s nothing to cut into, you can serve this on any kind of (food-safe) decorative plate, platter, dish, or tray. Giving our dear charcuterie cutting boards a well-earned rest.
Building the Mezze
To assemble the platter, start with the “main characters” aka dips! Place these in the center using small bowls, plates, or even hollowed bell peppers for a more creative approach. For this particular platter, I kept it simple with 2 dips: a classic hummus, and tzatziki for some variety. As a dairy-free alternative, you can omit the tzatziki and include a combination of 2 or 3 different flavored hummus options. I also think tabbouleh would make an amazing dip option for this Mediterranean inspired platter.
Next, arrange the larger items around the dips. Layer and overlap ingredients as needed. I used carrots, cucumbers, mini sweet peppers, celery, and grape tomatoes (grouped in sets of three on toothpicks).
Fill in any remaining large gaps with naan bread or pita. Keep in mind this platter is meant for dipping, so make sure the items are more or less bite-sized. I purchased mini naan bread and cut them into fourths. Then add feta cheese cut into cubes.
Then place your small filler ingredients. Tuck them into any gaps and wedge them between other ingredients. These platters always look best when they are super full and layered. For my board, I added pitted whole Kalamata olives and crispy roasted chickpeas.
Lastly, garnish the dips with a drizzle of olive oil and some fresh herbs. I used parsley on the hummus, and dill on the tzatziki.
