Hello and welcome to the very first #FrightFemmes Friday of the season!
If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:
The #FrightFemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.
This week, we are diving in with the first theme of the series: MONSTERS
The LOOKS:
+ Caro (The Grand High Witch)
+ Ruthmarie (Candy Corn Monster)
+ Laura (Boho Mummy)
Caro – The Grand High Witch
From the classic novel turned favorite film, The Witches, Caro brings to life The Grand High Witch. This look is so impactful, and sure to turn heads at a Halloween party or outing. The color palette really creates dimension and shading. Plus, with Caro’s expertise of special fx application, she created the entire look from scratch using just liquid latex and cotton. Truly an amazing transformation that I just can’t seem to stop staring at!

Ruthmarie – Candy Corn Monster
Monster… but make it sweet! I absolutely love the way Ruthmarie mixed up a bit of retro and glam into this stunning Candy Corn Monster look. Featuring DIY horns that you can recreate using just a few materials. Her use of color and techniques on the makeup application is so inspiring and makes me want to run and recreate this look asap! I’m just obsessed with every last detail! (PS- click here to check out her makeup charts you can download for your own looks)

Laura – Boho Mummy
I was inspired by a crochet knit coverup to create a slightly boho twist on the classic mummy. Leaning into (my favorite) warm tones of bronze, rust, red, and maroon, I created the smokey sunken eyes and heavy contouring. For the costume elements, I wanted this look to feel whimsical and like it was just thrown together with scraps of fabric in an effortless way. I think this is an example of how changing up the styling and color palette can completely transform a classic costume into something a bit more unusual and even representative of your own personal style.

Putting together the Mummy look:
Makeup + Hair:
- Messy smokey eye – I started with a base of black cream eyeshadow, over the entire eye area, and extended down towards the undereye. I then layered a combination of maroon, red, and black eyeshadow. The messier the better. As a nod to the classic mummy look, I added a small double black wing using black eyeliner, and finished off with clear lip gloss for a shiny effect.
- Dusty lip – I covered the lips with concealer and added red eyeshadow to the center for a dry cracked effect.
- Contour – For a sunken look, I used my favorite cream contour stick applied heavily around the cheekbones, forehead, jawline, and collarbones. To finish the look, I added the same contour around my arms for a dirty “dusty” effect.
- Bun mohawk – For the hairstyle, I created 3 buns in a row down the center of my head, and wrapped some stretch gauze bandages around them to tie into the outfit.
Outfit + Materials:
One of the key components of this look is stretch gauze bandages. You can dye them with black tea or instant coffee and gently pull them apart in some places to create more of an aged look. The skirt I’m wearing is a DIY made out of a thrifted cotton bed sheet. I started by making a basic circle skirt (click here for a quick tutorial) and then used a pair of really dull craft scissors to messily cut the skirt into 2-3 inch strips from the bottom all the way up to the waistband. To avoid the DIY route, just do this with a pre-existing skirt. Tip: materials like cotton, linen, or gauzy fabrics usually work best for this torn and tattered look.
You can replicate the same effect with a torn up top or dress. In my case, I wanted to add a more boho aesthetic to the overall look, and went with an open weave crochet style coverup (similar one linked here). I then weaved the bandages through the top and tied a few pieces of scrap fabric to some areas for a more layered look.
STYLING:
If I were to wear this out for Halloween, I’d take the look up a notch by adding more layers of creepy cloth and spider webs to the outfit – using safety pins and hair spray to keep things in place. Although this look is really meant to be disheveled and almost “falling apart” and is the type of outfit that ends up looking better as the night goes on and things start shifting around. Finish the look with a pair of tie-up strappy sandals (and add gauze or torn fabric to the straps for more dimension on the legs. Or opt for ballet slippers for a “barefoot” look instead.
That wraps up our #FrightFemmes MONSTER theme. Stay tuned for the next round of themed looks from myself, Caro, and Ruthmarie… coming up next week!
