I’m so excited to share this DIY fall wreath project with you today. If you’ve never attempted to make your own wreath, I assure you, it’s actually much easier than it looks. This is my first ever wreath made completely from scratch and let’s just say… I think I’ll be making one for every season next year!
The best part about this project is that it’s fully customizable. You can go as grand or as simple as you’d like, and use any kind of materials that suit your personal home decor style. I will say, the cost of this DIY can, at times, far surpass what you’d pay for a premade store bought one, depending on the materials. However, I am sharing a super affordable version. And if you’re a crafter, I also encourage you to shop your own “stash” of materials before heading out to purchase anything new. Plus, as will all DIY projects, you get the added bonus that your piece is made with love and completely one of a kind.
Anyway… grab a cozy drink and let’s get into it!

DIY FALL WREATH
MATERIALS
- a circular base (I used a hula hoop from Dollar Tree)
- glue gun
- jute twine or floral wire
- tape
- scissors or wire cutters
- your choice of florals / stems / embellishments (I used faux pampas grass and other items I had in my collection)
HOW TO
Start by gathering the assortment of floral stems and elements you’d like to use in your design. It helps to have an overall vision or theme to begin with so the final product looks cohesive. I decided on a neutral/rust color palette with faux natural elements mixed in with some dried flowers.
Then choose one main element for the wreath. This will create the overall fullness and also act as a base for the rest of the elements to adhere to. I used the faux pampas grass for this.

For the structural base of the wreath, I used a hula hoop that I already had in my stash, but you can also use a large embroidery hoop, metal floral hoop, or a premade wreath frame to save some time and effort. Since I opted for a more affordable version, I needed to prep the hula hoop a bit before moving on.
I cut off the decorative ribbon and gave it 2 coats of white paint. I recommend using spray paint, although this step doesn’t need to be too perfect as this will end up mostly covered.

Next, I started placing the pampas grass, bending the wire stems to create a circle over the hoop. I used clear packing tape to hold everything in place as I went along until I liked the final shape. I then secured the pampas grass onto the hoop with knots using jute twine.

This was the general shape of my wreath.
Once you have the base of the wreath, the rest of the process is really super simple… all you need to do is add embellishments! The choice of materials and themes is endless here.
I wanted to add a focal point to my wreath. To do this, I created a “center” point on the bottom right hand area by alternating the direction of the pampas grass and leaving a small gap to add the statement elements.
To cover the clear tape, I used a wide burlap ribbon and added florals and leaves using a hot glue gun. (Similar rust colored leaves linked here)
I then continued to glue small picks and cut off pieces from fall floral stems throughout the rest of the wreath for more fullness and dimension.

I really love how the different tones of beiges and browns layered together, and the pop of rust in the leaves really adds depth to the overall look. Last minute, I tucked in some small details like dried babys breath flowers and mini pine cones for a final touch. Just make sure everything is either secured with floral wire or hot glue.
I personally think this looks like something that would be store bought!
