Today’s DIY is super cute, trendy, and FUN. This beaded phone charm strap is like jewelry for your cell phone! If you’re a fan of mood-boosting aesthetic goodies and enjoy making jewelry or simple crafts, give this a try.
Last summer I made a few colorful versions with smiley face flowers, hearts, stars, faux pearls, and multicolored gumdrop beads. (you can find a few in my depop shop here!)
This year, I’m inspired to switch up the aesthetic a bit and make a more boho version using wooden beads. But you can have fun with this and create all kinds of themes and color combinations.
Let’s get into it!

- recommended: jewelry making tools, ruler, jewelry organizer, velvet mat, or bead tray
HOW TO MAKE A PHONE CHARM STRAP
Start by gathering the assortment of beads you’d like to use in your design. This is so fun because the options are pretty much endless! You can arrange the beads completely randomly, or create a pattern with symmetrical beads on both sides of the strap.
There are also tons of beautiful colors available for the nylon cord. I opted for white in this particular design to keep the overall color palette more neutral.
Next, arrange the beads on a velvet mat, bead board, or jewelry organizer. TIP: make sure to choose beads with holes large enough to string the 0.8mm nylon thread through.
Once you have the design laid out. Cut approximately 30″ of nylon thread. Fold the piece of nylon thread in half. Select the first bead (the one directly under the loop) and insert the folded side of the nylon thread into the bead. Then make a knot above the bead, creating a small loop. Make the loop around 1.5″ in length. TIP: the larger your beads are, the larger this loop will need to be.
This first bead is now the center point of the strap, and you can start adding beads to the 2 loose ends of nylon cord.
Once the strap reaches around 7.5″ in length, make a double knot on the ends to close the strap and add a drop of crazy glue to the knot.
For extra security and a more finished look, you can cover the knot with a crimp bead.
To use the charm strap: use the loop to create a simple larks head knot onto an opening on your phone case. It can also be looped onto earpod cases, keychains, handbag/wallet hardware, planner/notebook rings, etc.
Hope this inspired a few ideas and thanks for stopping by!
