Classic Halloween Makeup | FrightFemmes 2021 Vol. 5

In this post I’ll be sharing VOL. 5 of our 2021 Halloween makeup and costume inspo series. The theme this week is: CLASSIC

It’s Vol.5 of #FrightFemmes (a Halloween makeup and costuming series) today… and our last + final theme of the year is: CLASSICS!

If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:

The #FrightFemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.

We made it to FINALE WEEK! This month has been a blast and we’ve loved sharing over 15 different looks! (Click here to see all the previous looks!)

To end the series with a bang, we chose the theme “CLASSICS” and paid homage to some of the most celebrated and recognized Halloween looks (with our own unique twists as per usual).

The LOOKS:

+ Caro – Vintage Ghost
+ Ruthmarie – Victorian Vampire
+ Laura – Classic Clown

Laura – Classic Clown

Keep up with me and my #FrightFemmes looks via Instagram @laurajadeprado

What’s more Halloween-y than a classic clown?! I really wanted to create a glam/whimsy take on clown makeup. Adding a bit of vintage-doll flair and even a slight nod to the renaissance era. The color palette is right up my alley and feels like “ME” in clown form, if that makes any sense! Ha!

I had so much fun creating the accessories, that I even made a mini version for my doggie to rock on Halloween!

DIY the look:

Makeup + Hair:
  • sad expression brows – After applying my regular face makeup and concealer, I ran concealer over my brows. In this case, I didn’t want to fully block out and hide my brows, but instead went for a subtle “dyed” brow. Then added a dark brown pencil to the inner corners of the brows, extending the edges up slightly. This creates a more downturned brow that gives the illusion of a frown or worried expression.
  • reverse winged liner – To continue with the downturned/frown expression, I went against my usual instinct to lift the eyes, and instead created a reverse winged liner. I extended the outer edge of the liner out and downwards towards my cheeks.
  • blush + lips – A clown look wouldn’t be complete without the heavy blush and nose. I used a combination of cream and powder blushes to layer on a more intense gradient effect blush. Focusing the darker color in the inside and slowly fading it out towards the cheekbones and undereye area. I did the same on the nose, concentrating the darker shade on the tip and fading it up and out. For the clown lips, I added a heavy liner on the top lip and extended the corners slightly up and out for a subtle clown “smile”
  • final touches – To complete the look, draw two lines down from the center of the eyes, add tons of chunky glitter and face gems, highlight the nose, forehead, and cupids bow with a bright shimmery highlight or eyeshadow… and lastly – add a funky pair of rounded eyelashes! The ones I used were dipped in glitter (similar ones here), adding an extra layer of sparkle to the look.

The Hair: This look is the perfect excuse to pull out a funky colored wig. For more drama, tease to make the hair bigger! This look would also be perfect with pigtail braids or two mini buns on either side of the hat.

Outfit + Materials:
  • craft felt
  • yarn + pom poms
  • decorative ribbon + embelishments
  • tulle – around 3 yards (similar to the one I used)
  • sewing needle + thread or sewing machine
  • glue gun + sticks or craft glue

The two DIY accessories for my look where an oversized ruffle clown collar, and the little pom pom hat. There are many ways to create the ruffle collar, but this is the fastest and easiest method I found.

Fold the tulle fabric widthwise several times until it’s about 5-6 inches wide. Make sure the folds are facing you, and cut 6 inch strips of fabric. This width is customizable, the wider the strips, the large there collar will be. If you want a smaller collar I’d recommend cutting 4 inch strips. Cutting strips when the fabric is folded this way, is much faster and you should be left with super long strips of fabric once unfolded. Layer all the long strips of fabric on top of each other. This part is a bit tedious but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Use safety pins along the way to keep the layers of tulle neat as you keep layering.

Next, run the stack of fabric through a sewing machine using a simple straight stitch. Create another straight stitch parallel to the first one. Leave both ends upen. Make sure the spacing between the 2 stitch lines is wide enough to pass a ribbon or twine through.

Lastly, take a long piece of ribbon (or whatever you prefer to use to secure the collar) and run it through the channel. Use a safety pin for ease and make sure to run this through the opening between the tulle in the center of the stack. Gather the tulle, and separate all of the layers for volume.

To create the hat, cut a semi circle out of craft felt, and fold the two sides over until the meet, creating a point. Use hot glue to secure this seam. The rest of the hat is completely customizable to your theme and color palette. I chose to add a yarn pom pom to the top. (Click here to see a more in-depth tutorial for pom poms) And embellished the rest of the hat with ribbon, lace, gold star confetti, and felt pom poms. To make the hat wearable, I glued 2 ends of a thin elastic to either side of the hat from the inside.

And that’s it!

Ps- I was so in love with how this came out, I even made a mini version of the collar and hat for my doggie. I’m hoping she lets me dress her up for Halloween, or even just one photo.

STYLING:

For the rest of the costume, I was inspired by vintage dolls and the renaissance era. So I picked up this underbust corset from Dolls Kill, and thrifted a floral billowy blouse with ruffle details. The sleeves on the blouse are actually bell sleeves, but I just tucked the ends into hair ties on my wrists to create an extra ruffle.

I almost styled my hair in two small pigtail buns on either side of the hat, BUT the color and cut of this wig gave the look a more “doll-like” vibe. The emerald/green wig also coordinated perfectly with the colors in the blouse so it was almost too good to be true. If I were to wear this out on Halloween, I would definitely tease the wig to add more volume and… drama.

That wraps up our #FrightFemmes 2021 series! We are already so excited to bring an even bigger + better series for next year… but in the meantime, take a look back at ALL of our previous looks below:
