The #FrightFemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.
This week, we were SO inspired by the latest addition to Disney’s 101 Dalmation franchise – the 2021 live-action prequel film: CRUELLA, starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. There are so many amazing fashion and makeup looks throughout the movie. So we each grabbed our most inspired scene and created our versions to share with you!
The LOOKS:
+ Ruthmarie – Cruella’s “The Past” look
+ Caro – Cruella’s “The Future” look
+ Laura – Cruella’s “Dumpster Dress” look

DIY the look:
Makeup + Hair:
- exaggerated smokey eye – I used a combination of black, navy blue, and plum purple eyeshadows to create an elaongeted smokey eye that extended past the brows and into the temples. The undereye area should be heavily smoked out as well. Add a pop of brightness to the inner corners with a silver eyeshadow and glitter. Finish off with a pair of flared whispy lashes.
- rococo cheeks and lips – Use a bright pink blush on the apples of the cheeks. Make this heavier than you think you need it. For the lips, use a berry/pink shade in a small heart shape in the center of the lips. Accentuate the top with a more pronounced and overdrawn cupids bow. Then use a bit of concealer on the rest of the lips to finsish off the illusion.
- crystals and gems – I used a combination of face gems and smaller crystals to create the shape above my brows. In the movie, she wears more gems and glitter so feel free to take this as far as you’d like. I opted for a more minimal approach but, really, more is more when it comes to sparkle. I also added one small gem to the inner corners for a bit of shine.
- black nail polish – the one I’m wearing is by Sally Hansen in the color Black Out
For the hair, you can always opt for a black and white dual-toned wig. However, I went the DIY approach and used white face paint, dry shampoo, and baby powder. This is an easy way to achieve the look with things you probably already have laying around.
To style the hair, I pretty much followed this hair tutorial. You essentially use a sock bun to add height at the top/crown of the head, then take small 1-2 inch sections and start twisting and pinning them up into the bun. Tons of bobby pins, clips, and hair spray are involved, but this stayed perfectly in place for hours!
Outfit + Materials:
- base corset
- 1-2 yards of taffeta fabric (or something thrifted!)
- newspaper
- glue gun + glue sticks
- needle and thread
- scissors
- tulle fabric (or a tulle skirt / tutu)
- black and white labels or stickers (something similar)
- black and white ribbon
Start by cutting 2 long panels of taffeta fabric (approx. 60″ in length and 4″ in width). This will become the “belt” or sash that will act as a base to adhere the newspaper and extra gathered fabric onto. Sew the 2 long sides of the fabric (right sides together) then flip it right side out so you have clean seams. Then fold the edges under and sew a top stitch to finish the sash on either end.
At this point, you can try it on around your waist and start randomly gathering areas of fabric in a way that looks like it’s cascading down. Use a needle and thread to hand tack the gathered fabric areas in place. I also used a thrifted fabric curtain as an additional longer piece that I could tie around my waist and fold/gather/tack for more drama. To create the longer fabric piece, I ran a strip of scrap fabric (you could also use a ribbon) through the curtain panel and used the loose ends to tie it around my waist.
Next, take a newspaper page and pleat it by folding it over onto itself back and forth in 1 inch sections. For a wider newspaper area, I used 2 full pages taped together. I also made sure to select pages that were fully black and white with no color, and had some visual interest (like the crossword puzzle) for a more graphic look.
In the film, Cruella pairs her garbage truck dress with a black and white striped ribbon tied around her neck. I improvised and used this animal/farmhouse-themed ribbon because it’s all I could find last minute in my stash. I actually really like how it came together with the final look, as the words and animal figures complement the newspaper and Cruella vibe in general! To make the ribbon more “luxe” I glued two pieces together so it became double-sided. The thickness also helped the bow stay up and hold it’s shape nicely.
STYLING:
Once all of the components are finished, this look really comes together with the styling.
Start with a simple satin corset (the one I used had gold chain straps, which worked out perfectly so I could use a safety pin to secure the newspaper to the chain on the one strap. For the second strap, I just cut it right off to better replicate the strapless corset from the movie scene.
After the corset, you can wear a big puffy tulle skirt, or a nude skirt with tulle fabric tucked into the belt/sash. In my version, I am wearing a tulle tutu over a ruched pencil skirt. This look is all about layers on layers on layers. So when you think you have too many, add more!
Once your corset and tulle is on, add the taffeta belt/sash and longer fabric panel (in my case the thrifted curtain). Position these over to one side of the body.
Next, take the pleated newspaper and tuck it into the belt/sash so that it lays across the body diagonally. At this point, you can use safety pins to secure everything in place wherever you feel it needs.
Lastly, embellish with random black and white labels/stickers, and tie the ribbon in a bow around your neck.
I also chose to add a pair of crystal drop earrings that picked up the pink of my lipstick and also had that mismatched thrown-together shape – almost like a bunch of random gems found laying in the garbage.
I had so much fun putting this together and really hope someone tries this out for their Halloween look this year!
That wraps up our #FrightFemmes CRUELLA theme. Stay tuned for the next round of themed looks from myself, Caro, and Ruthmarie… coming up next week!
