Hello October, Friday, AND Vol.1 of our #FrightFemmes series… I mean, it couldn’t be more perfect.
If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:
The #FrightFemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.
This week, we are diving into all things “VILLAIN” for the first theme of the series.
The LOOKS:
+ Caro (The Countess from American Horror Story)
+ Ruthmarie (Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove)
+ Laura (Poison Ivy) + DIY tutorial

DIY Poison Ivy look:
Makeup + Hair:
- green smokey eye – I used a combination of an emerald green eyeliner, and green pressed eyeshadow, plus a bit of gold and green pressed glitter pigment. This palette is a great option with tons of colors that would work for this look. I then added a subtle black wing using black eyeliner, and finished off with my go-to mascara and some whispy false lashes.
- red lip – the one I’m wearing is by NYX in the color: Monte Carlo
- red brows to match wig color – I combined a brown brow pencil and red lip liner to achieve the right shade.
- blush + faux freckles – I wanted to keep the cheeks nice and rosey, so I used a bright cheek/lip tint with a heavier hand and then added faux freckles with a cool toned brown liquid liner. tip for the freckles: apply a small group of random dots onto your face, and while the liquid liner is still wet, dab your finger over the product and then “stamp” it onto other parts of the face. Keep freckles on the high points of the cheeks and bridge of the nose.
- red nail polish – the one I’m wearing is by OPI in the color: we the female
For my take on Poison Ivy, I chose a more subdued auburn red shade for the wig and an emerald bodysuit. If you prefer the traditional Poison Ivy look, I’d go for a bright red wig and a true green bodysuit instead.
Outfit + Materials:
- green velvet bodysuit
- faux ivy vine
- green floral wire
- brown twine wire
- glue gun + glue sticks
- small hair elastics
- wire cutters + scissors
- embellishments (glitter, beads, sequins)
Start by trying on the bodysuit and marking where you want the leaves to start and end. Then cut a bunch of ivy leaves and use a dab of hot glue to adhere them. Make sure they overlap. You can get creative here when deciding where to place the leaves. I opted for a smaller cluster near the top and followed the sweetheart neckline shape of the bodysuit. But, you can go for a more dramatic look by covering the entire bodysuit in leaves!
This step is optional but makes a big difference when the lights hit your costume as you move around. I added random dots of glue on the leaves and then sprinkled on glitter, sequins, and beads. Different sized embellishments will add more dimension to the look. Opt to hand sew the beads and sequins for better longevity or if you plan on wearing this again in the future.
Now moving on to the accessories. Measure a long piece of brown twine wire, enough to wrap several times around your forearm, from your middle finger to your elbow. Then use the green floral wire to attach the faux ivy vine to the brown wire by twisting and wrapping all the way down. Once you’re done, you can use a small hair elastic around your middle finger to secure the wire in place.
I opted to use wire for this instead of glue so that the materials can be taken apart and reused for future projects. But feel free to add a drop of glue on each end of the wire pieces for extra security.
Repeat the same steps to create the headband.
I love the way the brown twine wire looks a bit more “natural” and acts like a more solid base for the ivy garland. The green floral wire also looks like an extra part of the ivy vine and adds another layer to the look.
STYLING:
I only made one arm piece, but if I were to wear this out on Halloween, I’d definitely make 2 for the full effect of the costume.
To finish the look for a night out, add some sparkly statement earrings, a pair of sheer tights and a draping green cape!
That wraps up our #FrightFemmes VILLAINS theme. Stay tuned for the next round of themed looks from myself, Caro, and Ruthmarie… coming up next week!
