In this post I’ll be sharing an easy DIY pom pom wreath, perfect for a boho chic holiday decorating style.

Nothing says “cozy boho” vibes quite like a pom pom. They are totally having a moment this year and seem to have been popping up everywhere, from earrings and keychains, to party garlands and everything in between.
When I decided on my Christmas tree theme for 2020, I just knew I had to incorporate my pom pom obsession. My first thought was to create a pom pom garland to drape around the tree. But I decided to reuse my faux fur pom garland from last year, and instead opted to make a more statement, focal piece:
The pom pom wreath.
This is a pretty simple project, although a bit time consuming. I recommend watching a movie or binging a show while working on this to help pass the time!
Let’s get into it!
DIY Pom Pom Wreath
MATERIALS
- foam wreath form
- yarn (I used 3 full skeins of “super bulky” yarn and about 1/2 a skein of “medium” yarn)
- hot glue gun + glue sticks
- scissors (I recommend sharp fabric scissors)
- pom pom maker (optional)
- extra embellishments (I used an ornament and some dried floral vase filler)
- decorative ribbon
HOW TO
Step 1
This first step is extremely obvious but… make pom poms! Like, a TON of them!
There are many different ways to craft a pom pom. My favorite method is to use a pom pom maker by the brand Clover.
You can also use the fork method, the cardboard method, or pretty much any method you feel most comfortable with.
I recommend making larger pom poms, around 3-4 inches in diameter, for better coverage. But this will depend on the overall size of your wreath form. For a smaller wreath, make smaller pom poms. For a larger wreath, make larger pom poms.
I also made a few smaller 2 inch pom poms in an accent color for a bit more visual interest.
Step 2
Once you have your pom poms finished and trimmed, start gluing them onto the wreath form in a staggered pattern.
NOTE: prior to gluing on the pom poms, you may want to cover the foam wreath using ribbon or piece of felt in a similar color to your pom poms. This way, if any part of the form peeks through, it won’t be as obvious. I opted to keep my foam wreath white since my color scheme was on the lighter side.
Step 3
Continue adding pom poms to evenly fill the majority of the wreath. Don’t worry if you see gaps at this point.
Step 4
Now it’s time to layer on your smaller poms in an accent color. Glue these into place with a few drops of hot glue on the backs.
I decided to concentrate them in one area, but you can evenly space them out, or create your own unique pattern. No rules here!
Step 5
To add even more texture and visual interest, gather some embellishments. Here I am using some dried florals that are originally meant to be vase fillers.
I think potpourri, sea shells, and wooden beads would also look really pretty. But again, this is fully customizable to your own wreath’s colors and theme.
Step 6
Glue the embellishments in places to fill in any gaps.
Step 7
Add a fun focal point with something that resonates with your wreath.
Here I am using a Christmas tree ornament that has sentimental value. It was the “heart” of my tree for the past 3 years and represented our “first home” and all the loving memories we’ve shared under this roof :’)
I attached the house ornament with a generous amount of hot glue.
Step 8
Take a step back to see where you may need to add more filler embellishments to hide gaps.
At this point, you’ll also need to glue a piece of yarn on the back of the wreath for hanging. I stuck a few pins through the yarn and straight into the foam for extra reinforcement.
I also decided to add a long drape-y bow to the bottom of my wreath for even more drama. Again, just glued that into place using some hot glue. The ribbon adds a more feminine touch but I have zero regrets.
