It’s true. I’ll admit it. I will go to great measures to avoid baking. Frozen place-and-bake cookie dough is the ONLY dessert I’ve made in my oven over the past 3+ years. In my head, I saw myself baking yummy things all the time as a newly married woman – a real Suzy homemaker. But, the harsh reality is… I just don’t. So, what do I do when I’m in charge of the cake for an upcoming party and want to make it look elevated and like a ton of thought and effort went into it? This life hack I’m calling the “lazy girl diy cake decor” – aka a grocery store cake makeover.
How To: Grocery Store Cake Makeover
Step 1: Order a grocery store bakery cake. My local grocery store is Publix. You can order your cake online with as short notice as just 24 hours in advance, they have tons of different flavors and fillings to choose from, and they give you the option to order a cake with absolutely NO decor – just a plain frosted canvas if you will.
Step 2: Decorate the cake.
Step 3: Impress everyone at the party.
It really is that simple and silly. It’s also really fun to gather all the goodies to top the cake with. So far, I have used this DIY cake decor method on three occasions, all totally different!
Quick Tips:
- check Pinterest for inspiration photos of cakes so that you’re not totally overwhelmed by the expansive candy aisle.
- choose a theme or color palette.
- decorate in clusters.
- consider adding: berries, citrus fruit slices, merengues, chocolate bon bons, truffles, rock crystal candy, and fresh flowers (these are my go-to)
- add decor to the base of the cake.
- use straws to easily insert flowers. Just cut the straws into small pieces and tape one end closed.
- sometimes less is more.
- have fun with little personalized details like a wired initial topper.
This pretty pink floral design was for my best friend’s 30th birthday party:
This white, yellow, and blue themed cake was for a wedding with a sunflower theme. I ended up simplifying the cake decor and using fewer flowers than expected, but we still used the leftover flowers in vases for decor.
I hope this post inspired you to consider the idea of nixing the baking if it’s just not your thing (or you’re short on time before a party) and get creative with frosting, fruit, flowers, and other decorative items to customize a cake for any theme or occasion. At the end of the day, cakes don’t have to be expensive or exhaustively difficult to make; they can be fun and creative with a simple grocery store cake makeover.

They are adorable, and you are right! Why should we stress out baking a cake when there are so many options out there? You should spend the time doing what you enjoy doing the best. You are so talented and unique! 😍🎂🍰
