Chic Apothecary – Halloween Decor

This is our second fall season in our first home. And while last year I was solely focused on Thanksgiving and Christmas, I knew 2018 would be the year to pick up some goodies for my Halloween decor collection. As usual, I started by “shopping” my own closets, garage, and home decor to pull together items that could serve double duty for Halloween – trays, vases, candles, etc. :: Flashback to me vigorously scrubbing the labels off of old jars, bottles, and candles to use for this project :: Then I hit up Dollar Tree, Goodwill, and various craft stores to pick up a few creepy objects.

My vision was to focus on one single spot versus trying to decorate every square inch of the house. I wanted my apothecary shelf (aka our tv console unit) to have a more sophisticated halloween vibe with seemingly random “found” objects in neutral/warm tones.

I started by laying down a piece of netted cloth fabric (from Dollar Tree), placing a tray and marble tile, and then leaning some Halloween artwork and books right up against my already existing wall decor that I typically have on the shelf. I made the framed artwork by printing out images found on Pinterest and pasted them onto an old mirror (from Goodwill) with Mod Podge. I used the same print & paste method for the jar labels and used pieces of potpourri as filling for some.

The little black coffin and skeleton are both from Dollar Tree. The skeleton came in a pack of 4, and the coffin was a bright orange color so I spray painted it black. The Himalayan salt lamp is another home decor item that lives on this console unit year-round, and I actually loved the warm glow it added to the entire setup.

I wanted to add a creepy crawly layer to the ensemble, so I sprinkled some spiders, bugs, and mice throughout, but made sure they were all black to match the theme. The brown book is an old planner that I never ended up using. The black book is from Dollar Tree – I just removed the book jacket to have a plain black cover to work with. For the cover images, I printed and pasted them on using Mod Podge and brushed on some watered down brown paint to make them look a bit old and dingy.

In my opinion, the overall aesthetic really comes together if you use bottles and jars that have unique shapes and random sizes. Add dimension with candles and texture with greenery or foliage. I used some faux leaves I found in a closet, but I think moss would actually be perfect for this!

To fully complete the setup, I would fill in some of the jars and bottles with liquids, and maybe add a few spider webs in random spots. But for now, I am just loving how this little collection of apothecary tchotchkes turned out! A little creepy, a little chic, and a lot of fun!
