It’s the first official day of FrightFemmes season and we’re definitely entering our ~Practical Magic~ era.
I’m so excited to be collaborating with my insanely talented and creative besties: Caro (from Blonde2Brunette blog) and Ruthmarie (aka The Vintage Raven) again this year for another season full of witchy vibes.
FrightFemmes is essentially a Halloween costume and makeup series that we’ve been using as an excuse to play adult dress-up with for over 6 years now. (Take a peek at this throwback video to get a feel for the vibes… or click here to see ALL of our past looks.)
This year, we’re going beyond the powder and dressing rooms… and expanding to DIY lifestyle projects! So, if you’re a Halloween lover, but not super into the makeup and costume side of things, we’ve also got you covered! From home decor, to prop accessories, and even some kitchen recipes… it’s all coming at you in the next few weeks.
In other words, grab your broomsticks + potions because the ride begins now. Check in every FRIDAY to see new content pop up!
Follow the series on Instagram where we also post daily Halloween inspo all season long: @frightfemmes

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our homage to the Owens sisters from the ever-so-loved classic, Practical Magic. (Click here to check out last year’s Sanderson Sisters inspired photoshoot)
There’s just something so nostalgic about watching Practical Magic during the summer-to-fall transition season. We love the stunning scenery of east coast small town living, mixed with a dash of spooky witchy vibes! From the rosebushes in the garden to the impeccably imperfect Victorian style house, and the most quaint and cozy botanical shoppe… It’s all such a ~vibe~ and inspired us for this year’s introduction to #FrightFemmes23 season.
Here’s a peek at some of our ideas for the shoot. Because all good things start with a good plan.

Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.
SALLY OWENS
We had so much fun sipping on Midnight Margaritas and dancing around our little makeshift kitchen island. Half the fun of these inspired shoots is getting to put our little twist on the character’s outfits, and of course (my personal favorite) setting the scene with props and styled accessories. Bonus points for the kind you can also consume afterward!
My kitchen was transformed by layered books and cottage-core accessories mixed in with lots of plants and herbs for that whimsical and maximalist Practical Magic aesthetic.
Eye of newt and toe of frog. Wool of bat and tongue of dog. Adder’s fork and blindworm’s sting. Barbados lime is just the thing. Cragged salt like a sailor’s stubble. Flip the switch and let the cauldron bubble.
THE AUNTS
Midnight Margarita Recipe
- 6 oz tequila
- 2 oz triple sec
- 4 oz lime juice
- pinch of salt
Blend well over ice and pour into glasses. Garnish with a lime wedge and sprig of lavender for good luck. *Best served while dancing in the kitchen at midnight.

My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage.
AUNT FRANCES
To help recreate the stunning little Verbena Botanical shop from the film, Caro brought over her collection of tinctures and sage bundles from The Sugar Cottage and we styled my shelving unit like a boutique.
As the sewing enthusiast of the group, Ruthmarie made her slip dress from scratch (click here to read more about her sewing pattern and details!), while I pulled together a head-to-toe-thrifted look to recreate our favorite 90’s aesthetic “Sally Owens” inspired outfits for the shop scenes.
And of course, we made our way outside so “the aunts” could share a quick gossip sesh in the garden, while Caro shimmied poolside a la Gillian Owens in her LA party scene.
We hope you begin to feel the magic of this upcoming spooky season. After all, “there’s a little witch in all of us.” – Aunt Jet
