For Vol.4 of #FrightFemmes (a Halloween makeup and costuming series) we’re stepping into some of our favorite classic FAIRY TALES for inspo!
If you’re just joining us, click here to read the intro post… but, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell:
The #FrightFemmes collab is an ode to our love for all things Halloween… especially, the makeup & costuming. During the month of October, I’m teaming up with Caro from @blonde2brunette and Ruthmarie from @the.vintage.raven to create over 15 different Halloween looks. We’ll be sharing themed looks weekly, with the hopes of inspiring others to try out some new MUA techniques or costumes. Follow the hashtag #FrightFemmes on Instagram to keep up with our looks and some extra fun Halloween content.
This week’s theme was FAIRY TALES, and without even planning it, all three of us were inspired by the “villainous” characters in each of our tales. It truly must be… spooky season! Enjoy 3 new makeup and costume looks found in tales as old as time…
The LOOKS:
+ Ruthmarie – Wicked Witch of The East (Wizard of Oz)
+ Caro – Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)
+ Laura – Big Bad Wolf (Little Red Riding Hood)

Laura – Big Bad Wolf

When I was brainstorming ideas for this week’s FAIRY TALE theme, I couldn’t shake the thought of one of my first memories of a book I had as a child with classic stories. My favorite story in the book: The Little Red Riding Hood. I’ve dressed up as “little Red” in the past, so it only made sense for me to try my hand at the Big Bad Wolf. For an added twist, I niched down even more and came up with this look – specific to the part of the story where the Big Bad Wolf is disguised as her grandmother. (Unlock some childhood memories by reading the full fairy tale here!)
The makeup itself can also be worn with a fab furry coat (or any outfit really!) making it super versatile for an easy last-minute costume.
DIY the look:
Makeup + Hair:
- faux fur contouring – For the base of this makeup, I used a slightly lighter foundation to pale my skin out a bit. Then used a more cool-toned bronzing stick to map out the areas of the face where I’d be adding the “fur” strokes: the perimeter of the face, cheekbones, jawline, and down the sides of the neck. Slightly blend the contour edges out to create an ombre effect. Next, mix a bit of foundation with white cream paint and use this to highlight the center of the forehead, bridge of the nose, cheeks, upper lip, and chin. Add black cream paint over the contoured areas. This will act as a nice base for the brush strokes. Lastly, use a combination of black, brown, and white liquid liners to create whispy “fur” by quickly swiping the liner tips onto the skin, starting at the dark base and pulling out towards the higlighted areas of the face… release pressure as you pull the liners off the face to create a sharper point. Tip: Add a widows peak for a more wolf-like shape!
- wolf eyes + brows – I recommend an exaggerated black smokey eye for this look. Add more dimension by connecting the brow to the nose contour. To create a more elongated eye, extend the shadow up towards the temples, add a sharp wing, and apply half lashes slightly above the natural lashes, angled upwards. Then add a downturned inner teardrop area with white liner and create a sharp point. Use the same brush stroke method with black and brown liquid liners to create large whispy brows.
- nose + lips – Add cool-toned brown and grey eyeshadows to the sides of the nose and blend out slightly towards the cheeks. Keep the nose contour on the wider side. Next, use black cream paint or eyeliner to create the nose tip. Add a slight v shape at the bottom. For the lip, I chose to keep it a bit more neautral/glam so I used my go-to lippie: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in the color Abu Dhabi. For more dimension, slightly contour the top lip with a black lip liner and blend downwards. Tip: You can also choose to connect the nose to the lips with a straight black line for a more “realistic” wolf look
- final touches – To complete the look, I recommend wearing black nail polish. My favorite is Sally Hansen in the color Black Out. Add some “fur” brush strokes to the skin around the nails and hands for a more completed look!
To style the hair: the bigger the better.
For the “grandma” version of this look, create a short “bob” hairstyle by pulling the hair back into a loose ponytail and slowly pulling at areas of hair around the face (make sure to keep the ends of the hair still tucked into the hair tie). Then place the bonnet over the ponytail to hide it.
For a more “glam” version, leave your hair down with voluminous curls. Tease a few areas slightly for a more wild/frizzy and undone vibe. (This is my favorite teasing brush for this type of look!)
Outfit + Materials:
- wolf ear headband
- eyeglasses (my blue light blocking version here)
- cardigan (highly recommend thrifting this as you’ll likely find something that fits the granny-chic vibe lol)
- floral print fabric
- lining fabric
- sewing needle or machine
- thread to match fabric
- elastic (another version here)
- tape measurer + fabric scissors
The only DIY element of this look is the “granny” bonnet. I roughly measured the area of my head I wanted covered and added a few extra inched for volume. I ended up with about 13 inches. I then folded the fabric twice over, and starting at the corner fold, measured 13 inches in a curved shape. Mark with a pencil or fabric chalk. Cut along that line.
For my fabric, I am using a thrifted pillow case. Its colors coordinated perfectly with the cardigan sweater I also thrifted for this look.
Next, follow the same steps above with a lining fabric. You should now have 2 identical pieces of round fabric. Place the 2 fabrics together (right sides touching) and sew a straight stitch all the way around with about 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave a small gap (around 1.5 – 2 inches) open.
Since we have sewn on a curved line, add some ease to the fabric by creating notches. Carefully cut small slits into the seam allowance all the way around, every 2-3 inches. Make sure you’re not cutting into the actual stitching. Then, you can turn the bonnet right side out by pulling it through the small gap. Optional: press the edges down for a more clean finish.
The last step to creating a bonnet is adding an elastic . I am using this elastic that is super easy to tie in a knot (which will save us an extra step later on). Measure the circumference of your head and subtract 2 inches. Cut a piece of elastic down to that measurement. Then, use a straight stitch to sew a “tunnel” for the elastic to sit in. Make sure the tunnel is about 1/4 inch larger than the width of the elastic.
Use a safety pin to run the elastic through the opening gap, and either sew the two loose ends of elastic together using a zigzag stitch… or simply tie them in a knot if you use the foldover elastic route. Lastly, close the opening by folding the fabric in and adding a top stitch.
STYLING:
For the fairy tale’s Big Bad Wolf “disguised as grandmother” version of this look: wear the bonnet, with some wolf ears (I used a headband placed over the bonnet and tucked it behind folds in the fabric to hide the sides. Then add a turtleneck under a “granny-chic” cardigan. For the final touch, wear small gold-rimmed glasses.
For a more generic or “glam” version of this look: pair the wolf ears with a large fluffy/fur coat or jacket and some leather pants + boots!
That wraps up our #FrightFemmes FAIRY TALE theme. Stay tuned for the next round of themed looks from myself, Caro, and Ruthmarie… coming up next week!
