Fabric Obi Belt Pattern:
First things first, letโs create a pattern! You can use pattern paper with pre-measured dots for ease, or get creative with kraft or wrapping paper.
For the Belt:
- Measure Your Waist: Add 2 inches for comfort.
- Decide on Width: Add 1 inch for seam allowances.
- Draw a Rectangle with waist and width measurements: Cut it out and fold in half.
- Create the Notches: On the side opposite from the fold, mark 1.5 inches above and below the center on the side. On the fold side, mark 4 inches in from the fold on the top and bottom of the rectangle.
- Create Curves: Use a curved ruler to connect marks, giving your belt a beautiful shape.
Cut one piece from both your front and back fabric.
For the Straps:
- Draw a Rectangle: 38 inches by 3 inches.
- Mark and Notch: On one side, 2 inches down; on the other, 8 inches in.
- Curved Line: Use your ruler to connect.
Cut two pieces from each fabric. Now, youโre ready to sew!
Sew It Together:
Optional Step: Add fusible interfacing for lightweight fabrics.
- Attach the Belt Front and Straps: Leave a 1.5-inch gap on one strap for later.
- Sew Belt Sides: Right sides together. Leave a 3-4 inch gap on one strapโs bottom edge for turning. Cut diagonally across the corners of the straps for a more crisp point.
- Turn right side out: Use the 3-4 inch gap on the strap to turn right side out. Tip: use a pair of chop sticks to help push the fabric along in narrow areas.
- Iron to Perfection: Press all edges so theyโre crisp and clean.
- Topstitch: Securely tuck and topstitch the gap.
- Optional Finishing Touches: Angle the strap edges with a zig-zag stitch for flair!
Voilร ! Youโve created your very own reversible obi belt. Simply thread one strap through the side seam gap, wrap around your waist, and tie a knot.
You can save this pattern in your collection and mix and match colors and patterns to suit your style. Happy sewing!
